I would like to stand for the role of welfare officer within the surgical society because of my desire to balance the great academic endeavours and opportunities within the Surgical society with a strong supportive environment where everyone in the society has a voice to be heard.
Through my experience leading volunteering initiatives and student bodies, I have developed the ability to support teams effectively and approach disputes in a calm, fair, and objective manner, qualities I aim to bring to the role.
Moreover, I hope to build on successful welfare events seen in the past such as the scrubs run whilst also aiming to bring new energy and ideas to the role as I aim to foster an image as a very accessible welfare officer who is here to cater to the queries of everyone within the surgical society. I will aim to constantly be available and advertise my contact details should anyone require a drop in session whilst also looking to help incoming first year students foster a connection with the society whilst ensuring they maintain a healthy balance in a high pressure environment.
Overall, I aim to use my experience of volunteering and leadership roles to become a really accessible Welfare Officer who takes an active, productive role supporting the society through initiatives that we have already seen such as the Scrubs Run and through new initiatives to promote wellbeing and inclusivity helping drive support for everyone in the society and ensuring continued success.
Hi everyone! I'm excited to apply to be your next Welfare Officer.
As iNUGSC Widening Participation Officer, I have developed strong organisational skills and experience working both within and leading a team. Organising a conference for sixth-form students from underprivileged backgrounds highlighted to me the financial, logistical and communication challenges of large projects. Most importantly, it's shown me the importance of having an environment that is inclusive and supportive for everyone.
As Welfare Officer, I want to bridge the gap between committee, sub-committee, and members, ensuring that SurgSoc is a welcoming environment for everyone, whether fully committed to surgery or just exploring it.
To do this, I will implement:
- A more inclusive Scrubs Run - accommodating both runners and walkers, making it fun and accessible for everyone
- Wellbeing events - collaborating with sports and arts societies to run sessions such as yoga, rounders, crochet and more; giving practical ways to manage stress
- Regular drop-in sessions - providing a safe, approachable space for academic, personal, and society/subcommittee-related support
- Continuing the SurgSoc Families initiative - to support those who may not have connections in surgery/research, and strengthen the SurgSoc community.
I want to make SurgSoc a welcoming community, as well as academically driven. The balance between academics and welfare is so important, and I want to help implement this in SurgSoc.
Thank you for considering me!
Hi everyone, I'm Shreya :)
I’m a 3rd year student and I am running for the role of welfare officer for UCL Surgical Society.
I wholeheartedly believe that UCL Surgical Society is truly an incredible platform that allows all UCL medical students to navigate the amazing, dynamic field of surgery and also provides the wonderful opportunity to network with like-minded medical students, doctors and surgeons nationwide.
In terms of my personal qualities, I am an extremely friendly and caring person. Everyone’s viewpoints are incredibly valuable and therefore my main priority as welfare officer would be to ensure that I take the time to listen to everyone and deliver on any feedback that is provided to me.
- I have been actively involved in the RUMS Welfare subcommittee as a RUMS Welfare rep
- I have also been actively involved as UCL Surgical Society Publicity Officer in 2024-2025 where I have helped actively promote many events, conferences and opportunities via various platforms.
- This year, I am looking forward to helping out with upcoming UCL Surgical Society conferences through both of my current roles as a university outreach officer within the UCL Academic Surgery subcommittee and as a conference officer within UCL Global Surgery Subcommittee.
Here are a few of my core aims for next year:
1) COLLABORATION: with RUMS welfare, other UCL and other university surgical societies to organise large-scale, memorable events/socials
2) INCLUSIVITY AND ACCESSIBILITY
3) FRESHERS
