Shuaib Adam

I’m standing for President of UCL Somali Society because I genuinely care about the society and want to continue building on the progress we’ve made this year.

Having served as both Events Officer and Social Media Officer, I’ve gained hands-on experience in planning, promoting and delivering successful events. I’ve also worked closely with the current President throughout the year, which has given me a clear understanding of what it takes to lead the society effectively — from working within the committee to ensuring events run smoothly and members feel included.

I’m enthusiastic about stepping into the role because I don’t just want to maintain what we’ve built — I want to elevate it. I plan to deliver regular events similar to this year’s, but bigger and better, with stronger consistency, improved organisation and even more engagement from members.

My aim as President would be to create a well-run, welcoming and active society that people are proud to be part of, whether that’s through cultural events, collaborations or socials.

Sumaya Mire

I’m running because a society only works if the people leading it actually show up. Over the past year, I haven't just been a member in name; I’ve been at many events, making sure things run smoothly and helping out where needed. My work speaking at the Winter Access event to support prospective Somali applicants proved that I’m already invested in the future of this community and capable of representing us at a high level.

I’m not interested in the title for the sake of it: I’m interested in the work. I want to ensure Somali Soc stays active, organized, and useful for its members. My priority is to keep the momentum we have, improve our mentorship for new students, and make sure the society remains a consistent, reliable presence on campus for all Somali students. I’ve got the track record of being there when it counts, and I’m ready to take on the responsibility of keeping the society up and running for the next year.

I want to make sure the society actually adds value to our time at UCL. This means being proactive about career and university support- ensuring every Somali student knows exactly what resources, internships, and opportunities are available to them. But I also know that uni is exhausting, and we need a 'social sanctuary' where we can just breathe and be ourselves. My goal is to keep Somali Society running as a space that balances that professional ambition with a genuine social life, making sure it’s a place where people actually enjoy spending their time.

Being Somali is an important part of my identity, and by joining UCL’s Somali Society committee I want to help create more opportunities for our community to connect and support one another. I want the society to be a space where people keep coming back to because the events are welcoming and the vibe is genuine - not just somewhere people attend once.

I want to be president because I believe being active in your community and giving back is important for creating a safe space where people can learn and grow. As president I’d like to introduce more events and collaborations to increase the society’s visibility across campus.

Going forward, I think Somali Society should focus on unique cultural celebrations that help people stay connected to our culture, as well as engaging social events so no one feels alone in such a busy environment.

Somali Society has a lot of potential, and I’d like to bring more energy into it and make it a more inclusive and memorable space where people find real belonging.
