I love learning sign language and as a level 2 student I am always willing to learn more. I would love to encourage and support beginners in learning BSL and help increase deaf awareness. As an education officer I would prioritise the voices of the Deaf community to be able to share their experiences as a Deaf person. I enjoy practicing and communicating in sign language which is a key part of this role in helping students to sign and build their own confidence. I would love to be a friendly face any member of the society can approach and ask questions to, redirecting to the Deaf community where appropriate. Having done Level 1 BSL, I recognise the importance of learning sign language and its cultural significance, which is something I hope to support our BSL teachers in teaching more about in the society. Signsoc is an amazing and valuable society and I would be honoured to support all learners in their sign language journey :)
Having done both university courses in both level 1 and 2 BSL previously and experiencing a variety of sign language teachers and their teaching methods, I’ve realised what really works and engages beginners and other introductory students. I really feel inspired to be able to improve upon the delivery of our lessons and am completely open to improvement as a person. I feel confident in being able to fill in as Education officer to lead beginner classes to hopefully inspire others in the long term and to also not forget my own.
Hi! I’m Phoenix and I’ve been learning BSL since I was at secondary school. I love languages and as well as learning many spoken languages (including French, German, Spanish and Punjabi) I’ve taught myself some very basic ASL and LSF (French Sign Language).
I’m applying for Education Officer because I think learning languages is a really fun and useful thing to do, especially BSL which can be used to communicate with many people in the UK and increase accessibility, and I’m interested in making it easier for as many people as possible to be able to learn BSL. I enjoy teaching and have lots of experience - from teaching a free Latin class for children to teaching UCL students to knit with Knitting Society - and I’d love to use my experience to help support the society’s classes.
