Hi !!! I’m Katie (or KJA) and I’d love to be your President this year. If you know me, you know just how much I believe in student radio as a means not only to grow confidence; but to foster community, connection and impact through what, I find, does this the very best: music.
Growing and running my show has really been the highlight of my university experience so far, and — as you may have figured — I’ve come to really understand the significance of social media in doing this. As President, this is something I’d really look into developing; as well as fostering our links to artists, creatives, nightlife, charities and industry professionals working both from inside the university and throughout our incredible city. As well as encouraging the promotion of our shows and artists through the station and it’s social media, I’m forever conscious that being in London itself is such an opportunity and privilege in itself and this is something I’d love us to take full advantage of; developing our interdisciplinary, international and cultural focus, and, of course, taking over the world in the process?
For questions, or just a chat, you can find me via Instagram @katiesgh0st or email [email protected] :)
Since I can recall, music has always been a massive part of my life, and that passion has only grown over the years. And Rare FM to me totally feels like an extension of that. I've really enjoyed every aspect of being a part of this society, from getting to share the music I love, to enjoying the truly excellent events, and making some really wonderful friends. Getting to be a part of this society that I love would naturally be such a pleasure, and of course, an honour too. And I like to believe I could personally make a valuable contribution to Rare, which is hopefully made evident through my passion for the society. I hope that you will consider me! :)
Although I am one of the newer members to Rare, I believe I possess the desired skill, experience and passion for Radio that is preferable for this role.
Having been involved in radio and podcasting since the start of secondary school by helping to lead my school radio club, I understand the creativity, energy and consistency required to build up a radio station like ours.
Alongside this, I have been Head of Communications for the Aga Khan Youth and Sports Board's 7-17 portfolio for just shy of 3 years now, whilst helping to run UCL comms in my capacity as a Digital Student Ambassador for UCL's Maths & Physical Sciences Faculty. So, I know a thing or two about the importance of branding and media presence.
As a newer member, I also admit I don't know everything there is to know about the logistics behind Rare, therefore I would rely heavily on my Committee for guidance and support, as any good leader would, and should do (unlike Nicole in The Pussycat Dolls, I won't hog the limelight x)
If elected, I would:
- Focus on extending Rare FM's external presence through media strategy and sponsorship enhancement.
- Introduce more socials throughout the year because who doesn't love a RARE SOCIAL??!!
- Ensure to prioritise the current beating heart of Rare; its members.
Rare FM should be led with authenticity and drive, and I promise to bring both.
I am standing for a leadership position as I have loved being a member of Rare FM this year and want to keep up the momentum of the society. Currently, I co-host a show called After Hours where some friends and I mix music after our hectic day in the architecture studio. I bring leadership experience from running various music ensembles, hosting talks, and serving as Undergraduate Faculty Representative for The Bartlett last year. I would keep people dancing across various venues, building on the success of this year’s events while introducing fresh ideas - perhaps even some Northern Soul nights! I will ensure presenters get a chance to dj at our events, continue the Inter-University Charity Broadcasts, and get more live broadcasting of everyone's shows in UCL public spaces and cafes to raise audience engagement.
