As a Physics student and the current 1st year rep for physics department, I value the role that a strong academic environment plays in helping students navigate a demanding degree. I am running for Academic Officer because I want to help create more opportunities for students within the Physics Society to support each other academically and engage more deeply with the subject beyond our current lectures.
I believe that many people including myself would benefit from spaces where they can discuss concepts, work through difficult problems, and learn collaboratively. If elected, I would aim to organise academic support initiatives such as informal problem solving sessions and peer-led discussions where students from different years can share their experience and advice.
I would also like to help bridge the gap between what we are learning in lectures and the the academic world by organising academic talks or discussions on interesting topics within modern physics and current research. Events like these can make the subject feel more connected to real scientific work and help students explore areas they may want to pursue further.
My goal as Academic Officer would be to help foster a supportive and intellectually curious academic community within the Physics Society, where students feel comfortable asking questions, collaborating, and developing a deeper understanding of physics together.
Hi, I am Ali! As someone who staunchly believes the role of academics is instrumental in the success of any university society, I am keen on fostering a collaborative environment where students navigate the challenges of Physics with interest and collaboration. Having observed the events of this society, and the fun environment it fosters with students of all years, academic reps, peer tutors, and even UCL professors, I am excited to bring this environment into the academic events of our society.
My Aim:
Therefore, I am eager to utilize the next academic year with multiple skill-building opportunities:
- Hosting talks with alumni, PhD researchers, and industry leaders to demystify the path from Physics Student to Working Professional
- Organizing peer-led Python (NumPy/Matplotlib) workshops essential for practicals and real-world research
- Collaborative problem solving sessions where older years break down past paper questions and share revision strategies with juniors
- Partnering with other London universities to host fun academic competitions and collaborative events throughout the year
I hope my plans will make the next academic year much more collaborative and enjoyable for our society.
Thank you,
Inspired by Sergey, I wish to bolster student-professor interaction beyond the confines of the lecture halls. As the Academic Officer, I'll work hard to organise lectures discussing extraordinary phenomena with a special focus on the research being carried out at UCL. Interacting with PHD students, as well as your professors, will allow for greater networking and aid in the search for research opportunities. I shall ensure that the snacks are up to the mark, chosen by public consensus and that the posters are aesthetically pleasing, putting the Marketing officers to work.
As someone who stays extremely far away (8 mins), I'll put in more effort than I did for DEVCOM to ensure the lectures are interesting enough to motivate you to skip your afternoon naps and join some exciting discussions with our lovely professors and volunteers. As the rep, the lectures will entail a broad range of topics, catering to both those interested in STEM and those who seek the lucrative path of finance, maybe even throwing in a bit about the role of physics in the arts. Lastly, a vote for me would go a long way towards achieving infinite DAPs in the future!
