I have been part of the Music Society since last September as a clarinettist in the concert band, and I love the friendly environment regardless of your background or music experience! The concert band is a place for all musicians, and I wish to be involved in shaping such welcoming space.

Playing music in a band has been a significant part of my life since joining the brass band in high school. As the leader of the clarinet section, I learned the importance of administrative and group work in addition to practicing my instrument, such as setting up for practices, organising concerts, and communicating with conductors and other leaders. I enjoyed working with people in and out of the band to create the best music experience together.

To continue making the space inclusive for players of varying experiences, I would suggest music pieces of different styles and levels, and provide opportunities for both personal development and cooperation, for example, by sharing the music pieces and recordings before rehearsals, and proposing individual or sectional tuning and practices. I would be open for suggestions and ideas too!

I’m having a wonderful music and social experience in the concert band, creating music with people sharing the same passion, and I hope to give back by being responsible for the smooth running of the band and building a friendly community for all. It would be my privilege to contribute to the band as the manager, and I would really appreciate your support!

Claire Zhang

Hi! My name is Claire, I’m a second-year Biological Sciences student and I play the flute!

I joined Concert Band during my freshers’ week, and over the past two years it has always been a special part of my life at UCL. I love how CB creates such a welcoming and relaxed environment where people can simply enjoy making music together. I really care about preserving this precious spirit.

If elected as Concert Band Manager, one of my priorities would be to continue protecting the open-to-all spirit. It’s important to me that everyone - regardless of background and experience level - feels comfortable joining, playing, and being part of the ensemble.

I’d also love to explore ways for band members to have more opportunities to suggest and share ideas for repertoire. While the managers and conductor will always need to make decisions based on what works for our instrumentation and ensemble size, I think it would be wonderful for musicians to have more input into the pieces we get excited about playing.

Music is what brings us all together. I’ve always been wondering how I can help make Concert Band even more supportive, welcoming, and connected. I really wish for more people to experience the same joy I’ve found in this amazing ensemble, and I am ready to put in the effort to support the band behind the scenes.

Thank you for reading!

For anyone I haven’t properly introduced myself to: my name is Maya and I am a 3rd year Psychology Msci student, and I okay the trumpet! The 2026-27 Academic year will be my fourth year at UCL, and in concert band. Concert band and music society was the first club I joined at university and it has always been a fun, friendly space for me to briefly forget about academic stress. I would love to be concert band manager going into my final year because I want to give back to this society after all the friends and experiences I’ve gained from it over the years. My goals as a manager would be to secure performance opportunities for everyone (Blooms 2026?!) and to run socials to help us connect better as a group, and socialise outside of our instrument sections! I promise to bring a strong variety of biscuits every week, and to take on suggestions for socials/music/concerts so that everyone can have the most enjoyable band experience possible :)
