Manifesto:Creating a "home away from home" at UCL
Settling into university is challenging. Unlike high school, connections aren't prepared for you; you must actively seek them. With information gap, this is even harder. For instance,I missed the boat party ticket released from UCL as I wasn't aware of how popular it was and didn't expect them to sell out in a few hours.
My vision:Structural support
As your welfare officer and secretary, I will ensure no one is left behind due to a lack of information or connection.
Secretary:Radical transparency
Visual Event guides: Collaborating with the design officer, I'll create archives for all J-soc events, featuring popularity ratings, sign up documents and real feedback from past participants and post on both instagram and J-soc page at SU website.
Welfare: Empowering the community
Senpai-Kohai Mentorships:Introduce buddies based on degrees and language and I'll actively track and manage these pairs to ensure every new member has a reliable first point of contact.
Inclusive themed socials: Working with the event director, I'll introduce time slots in socials for groups by(course, hobbies, hometown) to break the ice naturally and reduce the barriers between Japanese speakers and non-Japanese speakers and create more welcoming environment for everyone.
Your vote will support the society to create a community where concerns are replaced by structural support. Let's make the Japan society where everyone, regardless of background truly belongs.
Hi everyone! I’m Iroha, a 1st year Psychology with Education student.
Last year, I was a part of Marketing and Secretary at Japan Society at the University of Toronto, where I managed meetings and SNS, and ran social events of 100+ people. I ensured a smooth communication across divisions as a secretary, by regularly contacting each member and attending meetings weekly. Moreover, I advertised the partnered restaurants by visiting them and creating posts and reels.
This year, I helped out at events and brought your voices and feedback to the committee as a subcommittee. I’ve gained a clearer understanding of how we can better support you. With my major in psychology, I care deeply about creating an inclusive and supportive environment. I hope to strengthen communication, improve welfare accessibility, and ensure you feel heard.
As your welfare officer and secretary, I would like to achieve:
- Smooth network of students
- WhatsApp community with an announcement chat, Q&A and a social chat
- Stronger Alumni connections
- between the UCL Alumni Japan and the Alumni Group of the University of London
- build connections between them and offer networking/career events.
- A Question Box for questions over the year
- Better advertising of office hours/ alternative options in chat/online
- Welcoming resources (a UCL guidebook) for new students
- Expand partnered restaurants and better promotions using stories/reels
I’d be so grateful for your support and excited to work together to make our society even better!!!!
