Priya Kanitkar

I would like to be BIPOC rep because as an ethnically Indian person growing up in the UK, I would love to uplift those coming from my community and other BIPOC students, no matter their background. By writing an article for the UCL  Law Society's magazine Silk v Brief, I have interviewed women of colour and did research on how the patriarchy has affected South Asian women. It has helped me understand the BIPOC community more and I am willing to listen to more perspectives. I have done this by attending career panels that have highlighted the experiences of BIPOC women, such as Black History Month panel hosted by the UCL Law Society where I was able to listen to the advice of black women in the legal field when I feel I otherwise would not have seen this representation. I hope I can continue to expand my awareness of the experiences of the BIPOC community through this role.

I would love to organise student mixers to help students in the Gender and Feminism society gain guidance from other senior BIPOC students, for example helping with careers or settling into university. I would also push for us to collaborate with other societies such as Indian Society and ACS to help with this initiative, as well as spread cultural awareness. I would also love to help organise talks on issues that affect the BIPOC community such as cultural appropriation, and also give recommendations for media that celebrate the experiences of BIPOC women.
