Hoihoi! My name is Anna, I am from Amsterdam and am going into my second year.
My vision for the Dutch society is a home away from home. I always find that it’s very natural to connect with Dutch people abroad, since we have so much in common. Whether you speak Dutch or are still learning, there’s tons to talk about, especially when accompanied by stroopwafels and kruidnoten.
Apart from the weekly koffieuurtje, we will have monthly events that connect us to our culture. Think: a visit to a pannenkoeken restaurant, pub evening with Heineken, biking tour through London, discussion on Dutch politics (Rob Jetten in particular 😛😛 – jk) or a visit to the Dutch embassy.
There are many Dutch people in London to connect with – culturally and career-wise. We can benefit from more events with Dutch and Flemish societies from other universities, as well as going to events together at the Dutch Centre in London!
Lastly, collabs with other cultural societies are an opportunity to share our culture and learn about a new one. This can look like a dinner or a workshop on a national holiday (like Sinterklaas) – whatever members feel like.
What’s most important is that we can create a community where everyone feels like they belong. Groetjes xx
