Lina Alipbayeva

Hi everyone! My name is Lina and I’d love to be your next Diversity & Inclusion Officer for Dance Society.

I’m originally from Kazakhstan (lowkey flex because it’s a super niche country) and being an international student has made me really appreciate how diverse and interesting the university community is. I genuinely love meeting people from different cultural backgrounds — it’s honestly one of my favourite parts of being at university. And I firmly believe everyone should flex their background, especially if you are from a niche country like me.

Dance is one of the most universal ways people connect. For centuries, dance and music have brought communities together across cultures, languages, and borders. And to this day it’s one of the most powerful ways to bond, express yourself, and make real connections with people.

If elected, I’d love to help create an environment where everyone feels comfortable joining, expressing themselves, and celebrating what makes them unique. I’d also love to encourage choreographers to include traditional dance of their home countries in their pieces so that we can all learn a little more about each other’s backgrounds. Maybe even organise a dance quiz where people show off a dance move and everyone else would try to guess what country it originated from.

I would put maximum effort into trying to make everyone feel as welcome in our society as possible!

Being Diversity & Inclusion Officer would honestly be such an honour.

Please vote for me!!

Mili Savan

I, Mili Savan, want to run for Diversity and Inclusion officer because dance has always felt like one of the most powerful ways people connect across backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, which is why I am particularly drawn to this role. Coming from a culture where artistic expression is deeply valued, I understand how meaningful it is to see different styles, traditions, and identities represented and celebrated within creative spaces. Ensuring that dance opportunities feel accessible and welcoming to everyone is something I care deeply about. I am especially excited to help organise the Absolute Beginners program, as first experiences can shape someone’s long-term confidence and sense of belonging. I would also enjoy working closely with the Welfare & Volunteering Officer and Liaison Officer to support accessibility and style diversity through workshops, inclusive socials, and events celebrating different cultural traditions and dance forms. My experience producing an inter-school arts competition involved coordinating participants, delegating responsibilities, and working closely with multiple teams to deliver a large-scale show. This experience would directly support the production of Societies’ Show and effective collaboration with committee members. I would also love to include cultural themes in pre-SCALA socials. I'm also willing to fully dedicate myself to the time commitment required of the dance society committee. So VOTE MILI FOR DIO!! ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

Sophia Waters-Chapman

As a psychology student and active member of Dance society, I’m really interested in how inclusive environments can help people feel confident and connected. I’d love to contribute to making the society as welcoming and accessible as possible, particularly for beginners and those who may feel unsure about getting involved. Dance has always been a massive part of my life and  something that always brings people together, and I’d be excited to support initiatives that promote diversity, accessibility, and a positive community within the society. I absolutely love working with other people and would love to be more involved with the society next year as I have had so much fun since starting UCl!

Abby Lam

I want to stand for Diversity and Inclusion Officer because I believe Dance Society should be a space where everyone feels welcome, represented, and comfortable being themselves. Dance is something that brings people together from different backgrounds, cultures, and levels of experience, and I think it’s important that our society actively reflects and celebrates that diversity. As Diversity and Inclusion Officer, I would work closely with the committee to ensure opportunities are equally promoted and any barriers are addressed proactively. Most importantly, I would aim to be approachable and supportive so that members know they have someone in the committee who genuinely cares about their experience and is willing to support them.

Giverny Kwok

Hii everyone, my name is Giverny, a first-year nutrition and medical sciences student and I’m running for Diversity and Inclusion Officer!

From freshers show to comps, I’ve met many incredible people from all backgrounds and have felt incredibly welcomed right from the start. I truly appreciate how diverse and inclusive dance soc already is, creating a platform for everyone that share the same passion.

Having stepped into a whole new dance style myself this year, I understand the nerves and worries about giving a new style a go (yes, I was intimidated). This is why I’m keen on creating spaces where everyone feels encouraged and supported to try something new without the fear of judgment.

I’ve also been around collecting feedback from members, ideas that could possibly be brought to life in the coming year, such as including more workshops for niche styles that may not get as much spotlight and creating more opportunities for beginners that may be looking to be more involved.

Having experienced the inclusiveness of the society, I hope to create the same experience (or even more!) for everyone that joins the society next year :) 🫶🏻💕☺️
