I am standing for Welfare Officer because I care about creating a positive and supportive environment within UCL Cricket Club. Competitive sport should push people to improve, but it should also be a place where everyone feels respected, included, and comfortable being themselves.
Cricket has also shaped my perspective. As an international cricketer from ages 15 to 18, I spent time around professional players and saw how important emotional dependability and trust are in a team. I have also experienced emotional challenges and performance anxiety in cricket. Regaining my love for the game came after changing to a coach who emphasised positive affirmations, self-confidence, and enjoyment of the sport.
I have spoken with the current Welfare Officer, Handsome Hugh Piper, to better understand the role and how I could build on the work already being done, including recognising the line between banter and abuse (big up JL). Hugh and the team also did a fantastic job with their Movember campaign, something I am passionate about and would love to contribute to as Welfare Officer. Hopefully, we’ll see some impressively jarring moustaches again next year. Additionally, surviving Nat Cunnold’s banter has probably given me a fairly high tolerance for questionable chat.
If elected, I want to continue building an environment where players feel supported and heard. I want to help ensure the culture within the club remains competitive while also being healthy and collaborative.
