I've got a DBS and a safeguarding certificate, and I weirdly enjoy the admin behind welfare roles. From working in a safeguarding heavy environment, I also think my personal experiences would make me quite well equipped for the role. I would take the role very seriously, and want to continue making The Cheese Grater feel like an inclusive environment, and that I can be a reassuring face that people can go to with their problems, should they arise.

However, on a cheerier note, I also have some wholesome ideas for welfare socials:

Anyone want to go to a comedy museum or do some pottery painting? If so... in the timeless words of George Michael, 'Baby, I'm your man'.

Neytra Jayaraman

I would like to nominate myself for this role because I care about ensuring The Cheese Grater remains an empathetic space for everyone.

It can be daunting joining a new society, especially in figuring out if there is space and a place for you there, and to feel represented. I would want to make sure there is no second guessing for any members at all levels, in the same way I didn’t.

I would encourage new members through showcasing the diverse topics of articles that have been written previously, so they feel instantly represented and involved. This could be through social media ‘Looking Back’ reposts of past articles every half of term.

I’d push to host more welfare events and use the welfare fund for stress releasing activities, including:

  • Park walks

  • Museum trips

  • Trying different cultural events around London/campus

  • Continue coffee chats (Perhaps scheduling specific topics, current news events or any other random queries and thoughts)

  • Gather event ideas directly from members weekly

It would delight me to be the reminder to any new members that there is someone there for them if anyone needs the support.

The Cheese Grater has provided me with an inclusive, comfortable and joyful space in which to be myself. The highlights of my week will always be the meetings, laughs, drinks and conversations, and I would love the opportunity to give back through this role.
