What I’ve done so far for the online Cheese Grater:
- Coded an entirely new website completely from the ground up, switching from Wordpress to a custom web framework purely out of sheer hatred for the former.
- Digitised EVERY. SINGLE. ARTICLE. from the Print Edition archives that haven’t already been uploaded online. Yes, all 800+ of them, stretching all the way back to Issue 1, November 2004. By hand. This means that our online archive is, for the very first time, fully complete!
- Won us a Best Website nomination for our new site!! (and a personal Outstanding Contribution nomination for working on it too :P)
What I’ll continue to do as your Online Editor:
- Post every article onto the Instagram account with a same-day guarantee: you’ll see your piece up the same day it was written (thanks to the power of automated wizardry).
- Work with the Editors-In-Chief to come up with fresh new post formats (if they so desire).
- Constantly tinker around with the website to add new exciting features and ways to browse our publication’s content online (suggestions more than welcome).
- Hit 7,500 followers by the end of the academic year!!! (manifest)
I would like to nominate myself for this role because, frankly, I am already chronically online so I might as well make it productive.
I spend an arguably concerning amount of time on Instagram, so I understand what is necessary to keep engagement high and the consistent flow of posting new pieces for our loyal readers. I’m confident in editing content to make it more suited to digital platforms without losing the original voice of the writer.
This role requires a hectic flow which I am more than happy to make my main priority even over uni work (thank god). I have experience with photo editing software beyond Canva (including Photoshop), and I’m comfortable thinking about visual layout. Viewership relies on translating writing to online, I will keep this up!
I am incredibly reliable, and the vigorous news cycle is something I would throw myself into. Behind the scenes, I would ensure articles are published promptly, working alongside the editors on a daily basis, and creating a general weekly schedule of release to adhere to.
The Cheese Grater has been a source of consistency and immense joy for me since joining, and I would love to reflect that back through this role, with the committee. I love the idea of keeping The Cheese Grater’s online presence as speedy and dependable as the publication itself, ensuring its brand of undisputed student journalism reaches people before their next doomscroll.
In short: I’m organised, and yes, very online. Vote for me!!
