James Roskilly

I have gained so much from rowing over the past 5 years and feel it is time to give back to the sport, hopefully instilling some of the same passion and enthusiasm that I have found.

I have had the privilege to experience the contrast in coaching styles from my previous school, previous club and RUMS, and am aiming to take on what I have found most helpful into my own coaching style. As an example of this, I would love to introduce some friendly competition into Thursday erg sessions via team challenges. As a novice, I found these an incredibly helpful way to encourage pushing hard without the pressure of a leaderboard-style erg.

For this season, I’d like to emphasize punctuality and preparation by teaching an early foundation in getting blades out independently, understanding cox calls from the start, and translating ergs onto the water. I will undertake to deliver on the admin side of Boat Club with diligence and commitment.

The novices will be my top priority in Boat Club, I want them to feel welcome, included and valued. This ranges from looking after them at Sports Night to trying my best to integrate friendship and team spirit into our crew and recognising when someone needs more support, either on or off the water. I will endeavour to be a captain that freshers feel they can talk to about all things, rowing or otherwise.
