I’m running for Social Secretary because I understand that the secret to surviving a rigorous biomed degree (or any other degree at UCL for that matter) isn't just spending more time in the library, but finding a community to recharge with. I want to curate a balance of high-value networking events and genuine, low-stress socials that make everyone, from freshers to post-grads, feel like they truly belong. I am committed to handling the logistical heavy lifting, from scouting for venues to managing our budget effectively, so that our members can focus on what matters most: building the friendships and professional connections that make our department feel like a home, rather than just a lecture hall.
During my time as Biomedical Sciences course representative, it has been frequently brought up that students value opportunities to connect and integrate within the course. I strongly share this sentiment, especially with the challenge of staying connected after diverging into our respective streams in Year 2.
As an active member of the Biomed Society, I have deeply appreciated the chance to get to know my seniors and coursemates through the biomed family scheme, the experiences and insight gained have been invaluable in shaping my UCL experience. The previous committee led the society exceptionally well, creating an undeniable sense of joy and community to the student experience.
I aspire to continue their hard work by strengthening our sense of community within Biomed Society. My prior leadership experience has helped me develop strong communication and time management skills, which I believe make me well-suited for the role of Social Secretary. My goal is to create inclusive and engaging opportunities for students to connect, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable environment for everyone. (Especially maintaining and improving the standard of the annual biomed boat party!)
I'm running for Social Secretary because I believe that while academics are central to our degree, having opportunities to meet new people, relax, and connect with others in the school community makes university life far more enjoyable and supportive. At a large university like UCL, it can sometimes be difficult to meet people outside your immediate tutorials or lectures, so societies play an important role in helping students build connections within the wider school community.
As Social Secretary, I would love to help organise events that bring together students across different year groups and courses who share similar interests in biomedical sciences. These events create opportunities for people to socialise, share experiences, and develop a sense of belonging within the society. Whether it's casual pub socials or larger gatherings such as boat parties, my goal would be to organise events that are engaging and enjoyable for everyone. Events that bring together students from different years could give newer students the chance to gain advice from more experienced students on things like module selection and research opportunities.
Working closely with the rest of the committee, I would aim to ensure events are well organised and accessible to everyone, while also being open to suggestions from members. Having enjoyed several society events myself this year, I would love the opportunity to help organise activities that bring the Biomed community together next year.
Hi everyone, I’m Eunis and I am running for Social Secretary because I enjoy meeting new people and helping others feel included. Being a biomedical sciences student in the first year, I understand how overwhelming university can be, especially in a large cohort where it’s easy to feel isolated. I want to help create a welcoming community where everyone feels valued and connected.
In my first year, I’ve enjoyed taking part in events organized by the Biomed Society, whether it is from internship panels to socials like the first-year party and Take Me Out. With previous committee experience in secondary school, I believe I have the skills to manage logistics and collaborate effectively for fun and meaningful events.
As a Social Secretary, I plan to:
- Organise more fundraising and volunteering opportunities
- Increase collaborations with biotechnology, pharmaceutical companies to give a clue for students about career choices after Biomed
- Create socials and schemes that connect Year 1 students with seniors, particularly the continuation of Biomed families
- Offer a mix of low-pressure bonding events (movie nights or desserts night socials) and larger socials (Biomed balls or career-social crossover events or charity challenge nights)
Ultimately, my aim is to help students manage stress by combining studying with fun elements to create a rewarding learning experience —because who says you can’t revise and have a good laugh at the same time?!
