Emily Zhu

Over the past academic year, I have had the privilege of serving as Media and Communications Officer for the Biomedical Sciences Society. During this time, I witnessed our society grow nearly fourfold. Contributing to this growth alongside an incredibly dedicated committee has strengthened my passion for the society, and I am now excited to continue building on this momentum in a leading capacity as President.

In my current role, I have developed and delivered high-quality sponsorship proposals and digital media content. These tasks required not only creativity and enthusiasm, but also strong attention to detail, organisation, and accountability. I take pride in not just getting things done, but getting them done well. As President, I will bring this same standard of excellence to every initiative we undertake.

I believe effective leadership is rooted in communication and collaboration. Through my experience, I have developed strong skills in delegating tasks clearly and strategically — ensuring efficiency and high-quality outcomes.

Beyond my committee role, I am also a Year 2 Biomedical Sciences Student Representative, giving me valuable insight into student feedback regarding academics and social events students want to see more of. This broader perspective keeps me grounded and connected to the needs of my peers. Combined with my strong network within and beyond my year group, I have a clear understanding of what students are looking for and how we can better serve them.

Talia Guillet

Hi everyone!!! I’m Talia, a 2nd year student. Like most of us, I found Biomedical Sciences pretty overwhelming at first, but this society is where I actually found my feet. Between the 3rd years who helped me navigate my career stress and the 1st years I’ve supported as a Transition Mentor, I’ve seen firsthand how an inclusive and engaging society makes all the difference. I’m running for President to ensure we continue building a welcoming environment where every student feels they belong.

My Plan:

  • Career Clarity: We’ve all felt lost in such a broad degree. I want to continue the eye-opening talks that show our opportunities are endless - from the lab to the corporate office. I’ll expand our internship and networking panels and introduce Guided Lab Visits so we can see the science we're studying in action.
  • Sharing the "Unwritten" Rules: I want us to be a resource for each other. I'll focus on sharing tips for navigating modules so no one has to struggle through the same mistakes we did.
  • Socials: I want to ensure our calendar has something for everyone. This includes inter-society mixers plus events with other biomed societies across London, wholesome activities like museum trips, and of course, a top-tier Boat Ball.

I’ve spent this year as a mentor helping freshers find their way at UCL, and now I’m ready to put that energy into making this society the best part of our degree!!
