I am standing for Welfare Officer because I care deeply about creating a society environment where people feel welcome, supported, and able to enjoy baking without pressure. Baking is something I personally use as a coping mechanism for stress, and I think baking and mental wellbeing go hand in hand for many people - it can be calming, grounding, and most of all, a great way to connect with others, especially through UCL Baking.
I also bring personal experience that has helped me develop strong self-regulation and emotional awareness. I was in therapy for four years and completed it at 17, which taught me practical strategies for managing stress, staying balanced, and recognising when support is needed. I do not see this as replacing professional help in any way, but it has given me empathy, perspective, and a thoughtful approach to wellbeing.
I am a very empathetic person and someone who is always ready to listen and understand. In my previous school, I was both a prefect and a student representative during my IGCSE and IB years, where I often acted as a voice for student wellbeing. I also had one-to-one conversations with students who felt comfortable coming to me, which taught me the importance of listening without judgment and signposting support where appropriate.
As Welfare Officer, I would aim to help make UCL Baking Society a supportive, friendly space where members can de-stress, have fun, and feel looked after.
Hello everyone! I'm Eileen and as someone who has been baking for 5 years, I’m extremely excited to be standing for the Welfare Officer for Baking Society!
I believe that a society thrives not only on shared interests, but also on how supported and included the members feel. Baking is often associated with warmth and community, and as Welfare Officer, I would ensure that the Baking Society truly reflects those qualities. I made many new friends through this society over the last few months and I want to ensure that this society keeps being an inclusive environment where anyone feels comfortable attending the sessions, regardless of their baking experience or background.
I have previously volunteered to teach at a primary school and was an active member of the student council in high school. Throughout my 5 years of being an officer in the student council, I learnt to work with others as well as communicate with others, whether it be a fellow officer, teacher, or student. Additionally, volunteering with kids taught me the importance of making myself approachable to anyone who needs a listening ear.
Being able to be the welfare officer for the Baking Society means a lot to me! With my experiences and passion for baking, I believe I could be a welfare officer that creates an atmosphere where everybody feels like they belong.
