UCL Badminton has been a defining part of my university experience. It has given me lasting memories and a family that I genuinely value, and I want to give back meaningfully.

That is why I am standing for Treasurer – to take responsibility for preserving and strengthening the financial foundations that allow our club to grow and thrive.

As Team England captain at the World Junior Championships, I oversaw team finances, tracking expenses and managing daily budgets during competition. Since the age of 14, I have independently managed my personal travel and tournament costs, both domestically and internationally, effectively acting as my own "treasurer".

If elected, my focus will be maintaining the club’s strong financial position while ensuring effective and fair allocation between competitive and social members. From member feedback, court access remains a key concern across the club. As Treasurer, I will work to maximise availability and flexibility by offering more court slots across various timings where possible, supporting the club’s aim of improving accessibility.

I will also ensure continued investment in both competitive performance and the social side of the club – supporting team-bonding activities and initiatives that strengthen the community at the heart of UCL Badminton.

Above all, I want you to feel confident that every pound you contribute is managed transparently and invested back into you, so that UCL Badminton continues to thrive both competitively and socially.

I am standing for the position of Treasurer in the Badminton Club because I believe I can help ensure the club’s financial operations run smoothly, responsibly, and transparently. As someone with an academic background in economics, I have developed strong analytical and organisational skills that are directly relevant to managing budgets, monitoring expenses, and making informed financial decisions.

Studying economics has also made me surprisingly comfortable with spreadsheets, numbers, and the small details that keep things running behind the scenes — which is exactly what a Treasurer needs. I enjoy making sense of budgets and figuring out how to stretch resources so the club can get the most out of its funds, whether that means better equipment, more socials, or supporting competitions without overspending.

And, most importantly, making sure we’ve actually budgeted enough for boba on our next Sheffield trip. Please vote for me!

Hi, I’m Ian from Hong Kong and I’d love to be your Treasurer for the coming year. Badminton has always been an unforgettable part of my time at UCL, and I want to take on a greater responsibility next year to give back to this amazing community by ensuring our club runs smoothly and transparently behind the scenes.

Through the data interpretation and evaluation modules in my degree, I critically evaluated clinical papers and worked with complex datasets, allowing me to effectively manage our club’s finances, supporting the development of its activities. Additionally, my role as a maths and science tutor has helped me hone attention to detail and the ability to break down complex tasks into manageable chunks, which will be valuable in keeping up with financial records.

If elected, I promise to:

  • Keep Badminton Accessible: Living in London is costly, but playing the sport we all love shouldn’t be. I will actively pursue SU grants and seek new local sponsorships to subsidise our court bookings and high-quality shuttlecocks.

  • Support Our Committee: I’ll provide clear, regular budget updates so our Captains and Social Secs know exactly what’s in the pot, ultimately planning better and unforgettable socials for us all.

Thank you for your time, and looking forward to meeting you all in future sessions!
