I wish to be Treasurer of the Autism Society to allocate our funds towards the activities that matter to our members the most. Growing up in a culture that stigmatizes autism, I remember being drawn towards the Society because of its relaxed and inclusive atmosphere, present from the moment I attended my first session in Term 1 at the IOE.
As Treasurer, I’d be in a flexible role where I can manage the Society’s funds, keep track of spending, support the Society’s members, and help organize events. I have experience in responsibility roles, as First Year Representative of the UCL Legal Tech Society, and as President of my high school’s Union of Societies. These roles required me to carry out administrative work to put on scheduled events for as much as 400 people.
My proposals for the role focus on inclusivity and depth. I want the Autism Society to become a space that welcomes neurodivergent and non-neurodivergent people with an interest in autism to share each others’ experiences and learn collectively. I would support balancing the relaxed LEGO or colouring sessions sessions with panel talks with professionals who advocate for or research autism and neurodivergence. Furthermore, I would organize group discussions focused on autism representation in the media, to critically examine well-known and lesser known portrayals on screen to find stories that speak to our experience. If this is important to you, it would mean the world to me to count with your vote.
