Hey everyone! I am Edith, a Yr1 Architecture student, and I am running to be your Abacus Society president. Having spent five years in boarding school, I’ve seen how a strong community shapes where you feel you belong, and Abacus has given me that feeling in London. As a president, I want to build on this by making Abacus a common ground – a well-connected and social space that brings together both the committee and all members.
What I aim to achieve:
- More meaningful bonds between members – Launching new socialising events like pub crawl and Inter-AbaFam sports competitions. Also, diverse social and career events through collaborating with other societies.
- Event quality focus – While I can’t guarantee you’ll love every event, I strive continuous improvement , especially to keep prices lower so members feel their paid events are consistently worthwhile.
- Better ticketing system – from physical ticket collection to Luma ticket platform, I want to prevent duplicate tickets found only at door due to unpreventable overpriced resellers!
In my role as president, I’m reliable, responsible and approachable to others in managing the internal coordination of events . With my leadership experience as past ArchSoc president and uplifting personality (you’ll never catch me without a smile!) I’m confident in my ability to lead and represent abacus externally while building a stronger, more inclusive community ahead.
Hi everyone! I'm Yiyang, a 1st year Nat Sci student running to be your President. Being the only Chinese person at my 6th form encouraged me to seek connection with other Asians, and ABACUS was exactly the community I was looking for, playing a pivotal role in my time at UCL. I believe ABACUS prides itself on its intercultural experiences, so join me in strengthening its inclusivity through my initiatives!
Broadening Internal Events:
- Introducing low-budget freshers week events including a welcome picnic and a movie night to increase member intake.
- Hosting a pres for Ten:10 so freshers feel more comfortable attending larger events.
- Organising a themed sports night pub social and an inter-uni game show to diversify our events calendar.
- Working closely with other UCL societies to strengthen community ties.
Stronger Communication:
- Having more frequent updates on Instagram and WhatsApp before & after events to boost engagement.
- Encouraging committee reposting.
- Implementing email confirmations for food event attendance.
- Using termly surveys (with £10 prizes) for feedback.
Decreasing Ticket Prices: collaborating with current sponsors & securing more partnerships so budgets can be reallocated towards lowering ticket prices.
Experiencing this memorable year has prepared me to dedicate myself to host events. I hope to use my experience in communication and task delegation as President to lead ABACUS alongside my trusted committee to deliver high quality experiences for the enjoyment of you all.
Hey guys! I'm Ivan, a first-year Business and Health student from Hong Kong, running to be your President.
I'll never forget my first freshers party, nervous for what was ahead, only to be greeted by the warmest faces and leave with some of my closest friends. Joining ABACUS was one of my best decisions, and I'm committed to being that same welcoming presence, ensuring everyone has an equally memorable experience.
From House Captain to Basketball Team Captain, these past roles taught me delegation and communication, but more importantly, shaped my belief that creating belonging is central to leadership.
I'm dedicated to keeping ABACUS an inclusive and vibrant home. My initiatives include:
-
Freshers Welcome Programme – Host casual informative gatherings (e.g. briefings, dessert nights, picnics) before term to help new members settle in
-
External Social Events – Collaborate with other London universities to host events like pre-drinks, pub quizzes, and e-sports tournaments, building inter-uni connections beyond clubbing
-
Stronger ABA-Family Bonds – Encourage families to meet more regularly through events like game nights to build a more connected community
-
Secure Sponsorships – Partner with more brands to offer exclusive discounts and reduce ticket prices, exploring cross-promotional opportunities in return
If elected, I will work closely with other ABACUS presidents to bring new ideas, staying approachable as I unite UCL ABACUS and lead our society toward continued success.
Hi guys, I’m Matthew a British-Born Chinese! I am a first year chemistry student and a pk promoter that works at Heytea. Through organising events, marketing new venues, and negotiating with customers, I’ve gained the experience and confidence to lead effectively. Abacus is a welcoming community where everyone deserves to feel heard and included and I’m committed to improving that.
My aims:
• Improving clubbing quality - Working with the other 7 London abacus universities, to set up larger venues and different events, so it stays fun for first years, but also doesn’t become deja vu for everyone else.
• More social non-clubbing events - Arranging more events throughout the year that aren’t just clubbing and dinners, including: karaoke, bar socials, and much more.
• Decrease ticket prices - Reduce overall ticket prices and stop inflated resell prices, also abacus consistently collaborating with pk will allow me to leverage cheaper ticket prices.
• Further community unity - Aside from just fyrs and abafams, potentially introducing a voting system for what other venues or events you guys would like.
Abacus has given me lifelong friendships and I want everyone to feel the same sense of belonging and passion I have had since joining this community. With my leadership, ability to talk with everyone, and determination, I’m ready to serve as your president and improve your abacus experience.
