Kai Burby

Hello, I'm Kai, a first-year Natural Sciences student, and I'm running for Events Director this year. I'm half Japanese and half British, but I grew up in London, and through ABACUS I’ve really enjoyed meeting new people and making friends from different countries. It’s been a great way to connect with people I might never have met otherwise, and I’d love the opportunity to help create that same experience for even more members this year.

If elected, one of my main goals would be to increase the number of internal events at a lower price point, especially at the start of the year, so ABACUS feels more welcoming and accessible to newcomers. More casual activities like karaoke, bowling, and mahjong nights would give people relaxed spaces to socialise and get to know each other. I’d also like to host pres and organise ABACUS families earlier in the year, helping newcomers meet people in smaller groups before heading to bigger events like Ten:10. I'd also like to work with the future sports sec to organise more sporting events, such as climbing and badminton, giving members another fun way to meet people and build friendships outside of the usual clubbing.

I believe my enthusiasm for organising these events and bringing people together would make me well suited for this role. I’d be really excited to work with the rest of the committee to organise a fun and inclusive year of events, and to continue helping ABACUS grow as a community where everyone feels welcome.

Watching the current Events Director and the abacus team plan and perfectly execute the ABACUS events so far has been inspiring. Mostly because I have some experience with organising events but on a smaller scale. This has inspired me to apply for this role to sharpen these skills in a larger and more impactful setting. With my previous experiences, I have learned the importance of planning, having clear communication between the team and being meticulous with the attention to detail to ensure the events run smoothly and safely.

The Events Director role stood out to me because it essentially has so many potential possibilities on what can be created and re-done. Being present at most events this year has shown me the endless possibilities of collaborating with other universities while maintaining amazing friendships within our AbaFam. I am particularly excited about working closely with the President on the external events and aid with supporting the coordination of ticket sales, knowing how crucial the logistics and profits are to the success and enjoyment of any event.

I adapt quickly and love innovative ideas, which allows me to be organised, reliable and hopefully fun. I am confident that my existing experiences, combined with my excitement to take create the best events, will assist us in making events with a larger impact than ever before.

Yoko Xu

Hi everyone! I’m Yoko, a first-year History of Art student running to be your next events director. Having grown up in Hong Kong and studied in the UK for the past five years, ABACUS immediately resonated with me as a diverse space where different cultural identities connect within a welcoming community. I truly value the society’s ability to bring people together to have fun and create unforgettable memories.

Throughout high school, I was actively involved in MUN and debate, taking on leadership roles to organise meetings and guide team discussions. As a member of the European Youth Parliament, I collaborated with international teams on large-scale conferences centred on cross-cultural dialogue. These experiences strengthened my confidence in coordinating teams, communicating across cultures, and executing events successfully.

I also genuinely enjoys the social side of university life. I spend a lot of time exploring different events and venues across London, so I’ve naturally become familiar with the people and energy behind the scenes. I’d love to bring that perspective into ABACUS while keeping our events organised and intentional. If elected, I would also focus on strengthening London ABACUS ties and creating a balanced mix of larger events and smaller, more personal gatherings.

I want ABACUS events to be the kind you look forward to — and the kind you actually remember. I’d love to play a part in building the kind of year we’ll all look back on fondly.
