I am standing for the Social Media officer of Student Action for Refugees Society because I want to raise awareness on the issue of the refugee crisis and discrimination in the UK. I see this society as fundamental for promoting and helping refugees and asylum seekers by encouraging community cohesion, an aspect that UK laws neglect. Being a law student with interest in international and immigration law, I have studied the rigidity of UK immigration rules compared to those of other countries. Working at Haringey Migrant Support Centre, a clinic that provides free casework advice to undocumented migrants, I have even witnessed the effects of UK's immigration laws on undocumented migrants. Thus, I believe and align with this society's aims of establishing a positive image of refugees and asylum seekers, I see social media as the most effective way of doing so due to its outreach and accessibility. Being the promotions assistant for DIO Committee of UCL Law Society has equipped me with the necessary skills for advertising key events and raising awareness of important issues through different platforms such as through Instagram and TikTok. If I received this position, I aim to create a page and post frequently on major problems affecting refugees and asylum and how the community could help mitigate this. I would also advertise volunteering and general campaigns held by the society in general to increase its visibility and make people aware.
