Hi everyone! My name is Gauri and I am currently a first year student at the Institute of the Americas. I believe STAR has the potential to be the driving force in positive change for refugees’ rights, and I will work tirelessly to achieve this.
Growing up in Hong Kong, refugees were often misrepresented and unjustly treated by a system that was designed to fight against them. Having to witness their dreams and ambitions be limited by their immigration status inspired me to take action. As charity prefect, and head of the charity society at my school, I made meaningful volunteering easily accessible to all students by creating programs such as tutoring for refugees and had art students paint shoes for refugee children. I bring this past experience and my passion to STAR.
I hope to continue STAR’s position as a united, all-inclusive society amplifying the voices of those often silenced. A big goal of mine with STAR is to increase our outreach and awareness by engaging the wider UCL community with events and fundraisers like hosting more external speakers and hands-on volunteering with local charities. As a Journalist at Paiwand, a London refugee charity, I understand what our community needs from us.
Feel free to email me for a chat or any questions you may have!

I would be a strong candidate for President of the Student Action for Refugees (STAR) society, given my two years of active involvement and leadership within the society. During this time, I have helped organize key events, including a football tournament, English workshops, and outings such as a visit to the British Museum, as well as participating in STAR training sessions to enhance my understanding of refugee support initiatives. My experience has given me valuable insight into how STAR operates and the impact we can have, and I am committed to making next year even more dynamic. I plan to expand our activities by increasing the number of events, incorporating more academic and volunteer opportunities, and fostering collaborations with other societies and organizations to broaden our reach and effectiveness. My passion and my experience makes me eager to lead STAR in becoming an even more active and engaged community advocating for refugee rights and support.
