Sign Language Society: Welfare Officer

Hiya lovely people! 🤟

I’m Selvar and I’m running to be your Welfare Officer – because who wouldn’t want to be the person responsible for good vibes, snacks, and looking after everyone’s wellbeing?

I’ve been learning BSL for 2 years now, and Sign Language Society has been one of the best parts of my uni life. I want to help make sure everyone feels just as welcome, whether you’re signing like a Beyoncé interpreter or sweating over how to sign “croissant” without summoning a demon.

If elected, I promise to:
✨ Bring vegan cupcakes to socials (because what’s welfare without snacks??)
✨ Hype up our lunchtime practice sessions 
✨ Trips to Liberty Festival 2025 (London's biggest festival celebrating D/deaf, disabled and neurodiverse artists)
✨ Deaf U screening socials!!
✨ Trips to signed/interpreted comedy gigs
✨ Work with other societies so we can spread the BSL love far and wide
✨ Get some London uni collabs going
✨ Little myth-busting posts/sessions about Deaf culture & BSL — things like “Why BSL isn’t just signed English” or "icons of BSL history"!
✨ Trips to SignFest or Deaffest (the UK’s Deaf Film & Arts Festival)

Most importantly, I want to make sure everyone feels comfy, supported and excited to sign with us. Whether you need a chat, a cupcake, or just someone to help you remember the sign for “penguin,” I’ve got your back.
