As an ambassador to the Children's Commissioner, I have championed young people’s voices in Parliament, influencing inclusive policy and advocating for POC representation. My experience navigating institutional systems equips me to push for meaningful change at UCL. I have led campaigns on education reform, decolonizing the curriculum, and mental health, directly aligning with POC student concerns. My leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills will help create inclusive spaces, improve well-being support, and ensure the curriculum reflects diverse communities at UCL.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I plan to create vibrant, inclusive events where POC students feel safe and celebrated. By collaborating with UCL societies, I will organize creative events like poetry slams for POC students to share their experiences and professional networking events with successful POC leaders to inspire ambition. Additionally, I will host meetings and establish an anonymous feedback system to ensure POC voices are heard and concerns addressed within the SU and wider university.

Ashni Birthare (she/her )
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I bring leadership, communication, and organisational skills from managing a 32-member council and founding a psychology club, showing initiative and commitment to supporting others. Engaging with young students has strengthened my interpersonal skills. My passion for diversity is reflected in my love for global music and traditions. As an international student in London, I’ve experienced the power of cultural diversity firsthand, reinforcing my dedication to creating an inclusive, vibrant community and expanding my cultural understanding.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

As an international student, I understand how isolating it can be without a strong community. I will ensure that every POC student has access to a multicultural, judgment-free space where they can connect, learn, and celebrate diversity by sharing their personal stories. The current SU lacks an integrated POC experience, and I am committed to changing that. I am approachable and have leadership experience as the founder of my school’s Psychology Club and a former student council president, giving me the skills to organise fun, inclusive, and engaging cultural events.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

If elected as People of Colour Officer, I aim to build a more connected and celebrated POC community at UCL, ensuring all students feel represented and empowered. I will expand the role’s reach by improving communication and engagement with cultural societies. I plan to organise more POC-centred events while fostering integration between different communities. Through cultural food festivals, music showcases, and immersive experiences, I will bring more culture to UCL, making diversity more visible, celebrated, and inclusive for all.

Sakina Fakhruddin (She/her)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

As a person of colour, since I was young I have felt like my colour set me apart from my favourite actors, characters and even my own mother was always fairer in skin, so I tried every whitening cream and press powder to look more like her. Now, I hold pride in my skin, and now that I can foundation match correctly 😉 (shoutout to Fenty Beauty) I have learnt to love every part of it. I have past organisational roles as head girl, peer tutor and TEDx organiser+speaker. This has equipped me with skills in communication and executing events that concern a large number of people.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?
  • Create a safe, creative and fun environment for POC's
  • Work to execute and communicate your thoughts and interests to decision-making bodies in the Union.

Some of my existing ideas include:

  • Insta stories/ TikToks on Book of the Week (POC author), small businesses by POC's in London,
  • POC art pop-ups in London
  • Spoken word poetry events lead by students of colour.
  • Anonymous forms to fill in any questions/advice/support links for POCs.

I am willing to listen and work alongside you all to create a strong POC network.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.
