Ben Holman

Hi Everyone,
My name is Benjamin Holman and I'm running to be the head of competitions for UCL Mathematics society!
Like many of you I'm very interested in maths and in particular I really like the kind of maths problems which need basic mathematical techniques applied in unique and interesting ways and I've found that the main place which implements these kinds of problems is in maths competitions and in UCL I've found there aren't really that many maths competitions.

If elected, I would aim to organise maths competitions in UCL for all students who have a mathematical mind and find excitement in the competitive aspect of it. I would also aim to get UCL involved in some international maths competitions as well.

I already have experience being involved in the maths society as I am running and organising the UCL Integration workshops to prepare a team for the UK Integration Bee and I am also currently organising a UCL integration bee for April. I also have experience being involved in maths competitions having done many in school such as the Irish Maths Olympiad and more recently taking part in the UK Integration Bee. I feel that my organisational skills along with having a clear understanding of being a competitor in Maths competitions makes me an idea candidate for this role.

Thank you for reading my manifesto

Arhham Shah

After serving as the Math Society's events officer this year, I am standing for the position of Head of Competitions in the UCL Math Society because I am passionate about making mathematics more engaging, accessible, and intellectually stimulating for all students. As a Theoretical Physics student, I have seen firsthand how mathematics is not just an abstract discipline but a powerful tool that shapes our understanding of the universe. I want to share this enthusiasm by organizing challenging and exciting competitions that inspire students to think critically and creatively.

Beyond my academic background, I have experience in event planning, having worked as a freelance event organizer in Mumbai for over a year. This has equipped me with the skills to efficiently plan and execute structured, large-scale events—skills that are essential for organizing high-quality math competitions. I aim to introduce new formats, increase participation, and collaborate with other societies to create interdisciplinary problem-solving challenges.

As Head of Competitions, my goal is to foster a competitive yet supportive environment where students can sharpen their problem-solving skills, push their limits, and develop a deeper appreciation for mathematics. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to the Math Society and make competitions an exciting highlight of the year.
