Hiking Club: Treasurer

Hi All! I’m running to be next year’s Treasurer, helping to keep the club’s finances running smoothly, maximising the number of residentials we can get and ensuring the Walk Leaders are reimbursed! 

Excited for more residentials? 

I’m eager to find a club sponsor, helping to support us financially (offering advertising opportunities in return) and making sure that we have more left in the bank when it comes to Residentials. Striking a deal with the Youth Hostel Association (YHA) who we usually use for our trips may also help us save in the long term.

Last year, we were able to secure a 10% discount from Cotswolds for our members. If elected, I’ll make sure to reach out to Trespass, The North Face, Go Outdoors, Millets and other outdoors companies and find those discounts so that you get really high value for membership! 

As the current club Secretary, I’ve launched the First Ever Inter-University Team Hiking Competition (to be held in June annually) which will bring together all the things that I’m passionate about: orienteering, camping and most importantly hiking! As Treasurer, I’ll make sure that this event continues to grow and becomes one of the highlights of our Hiking Calendar! 

 As Treasurer, my ethos would be simple:

Money = More Residentials = More Hiking = More FUN!!!

I’ve outlined just a few ideas about how I hope to improve the club, and with your support I hope to share and implement them with the next committee!

Hi, I’m Nellie and I’m running to be your next Treasurer! Here’s why you should vote for me: 

1. Active club member

   On top of walk leading, I've been an active part of the sub-committee, helping to launch our brand new magazine ‘The Navigator’. Working closely with committee members on this project has given me a great insight into what exactly their roles are like and has only made me more enthusiastic about joining the team!

2.  Leadership

   As well as being elected to lead the Student Digital Leaders in my high school, I have worked a managerial position in a London café. I’ve learnt a lot about problem solving and team communication, and also gained experience with thorough admin completion and finance handling. As Treasurer, my efficiency and attention to detail mean I'll get the job done quickly and correctly!

3.  Inclusivity & encouragement

   One of my most rewarding experiences has been volunteering to help children with physical disabilities and learning difficulties enjoy horse-riding lessons in a safe, relaxing environment. This inspired me to start my current job, teaching beginner coding classes to primary school children. 

As your Treasurer I will work closely with the committee on the financial side of planning our amazing hikes and residentials. I'll also make sure our walk leaders are reimbursed for their hard work that makes our hikes possible! Thanks for reading and I'll see you soon! :)

My name is Zahra , and I have been part of the UCL Hiking Club since 2023. I have attended multiple residentials, many weekend hikes, and various socials. Many of these have been some of the best experiences of my time at UCL—from playing card games until 2 a.m. to conquering the Three Peaks of Surrey—and I want to be part of the team that works hard to deliver these experiences to members.

I am running for the role of Treasurer. The main responsibility of a treasurer is to maintain the financial health of the society to ensure we can continue offering memorable hikes and socials .I believe I would be a great fit for this role because I have experience developing spreadsheets for budgeting and creating invoices. I will ensure the club’s funds are used responsibly and will work closely with the president to allocate resources effectively, ensuring our spending meets your needs . I will  make sure walk leaders are reimbursed for their train tickets.

I aim to manage our spending  to introduce weekend camping trips and less challenging overnight hikes alongside the residential officer, making hiking more accessible for beginners. I also want to increase the perks of being on the committee or a walk leader by offering discounts on club merchandise. Additionally, I hope to expand our merchandise range to include fleeces, socks, and keyrings. Furthermore, I plan to reach out to potential sponsors in collaboration with the welfare and outreach officer.
