Candidates

Vítek Seidler

Hello, my name is Vítek, and I am a third-year ESPS dual-degree student and a passionate hiker. I come from the beautiful hilly city of Prague, Czechia – a country with the densest and oldest network of hiking trails in the world, and with a genuine hiking culture where Google Maps never established as number one since they don’t work well for navigating in terrain (Feel free to try Mapy.cz :) )

During my studies, I organised around twenty hikes and trips to escape the city, enjoy nature, and have great discussions with friends. I have planned journeys through mountains, rural areas, and city outskirts, including more challenging treks such as an annual 40-50 km day hike.

As Routemaster, I would love to do the same for the Hiking Club. Since trips often fill up weeks in advance, I will ensure enough hikes are organised to meet demand and allow more UCL students to explore England’s nature. I look forward to sharing my passion for hiking and route planning with the club!

Zahra Merchant

My name is Zahra , and I have been part of the UCL Hiking Club since 2023. I have attended multiple residentials, many weekend hikes, and various socials. Many of these have been some of the best experiences of my time at UCL—from playing card games until 2 a.m. to conquering the Three Peaks of Surrey—and I want to be part of the team that works hard to deliver these experiences to members.

I am running for the role of Routemaster. The main responsibility required is to plan weekend hikes and ensure everyone's safety. I believe I would be a great fit for this role because I love planning hikes and designing routes, using AllTrails as my main source of inspiration. I  have extensive knowledge of the National Rail system—I know how to get you anywhere, whether you prefer the cheapest or the quickest route. I always plan to finish before sunset and keep an eye on changing weather conditions to ensure safety. Having been on many weekend hikes, I also have a solid understanding of the pace, difficulty levels, and distances required for different hikes.

I aim to work with the Communications Officer to create a suggestion box, allowing members to share where they would like to go each term and incorporating their ideas into my planning. I will ensure hikes accommodate all ability levels and foster a beginner-friendly environment. I have a long list of hikes on my bucket list and I can't wait to share them with you!

Thank you! 🙂

Declan Loo

MORE HIKES * MORE SOCIALS = FUN^FUN

Hey everyone, I'm Declan Loo and I am running for Routemaster. I’m sure that you've seen me in a handful of weekend and residential hikes, such as Seven Sisters, Surrey Three Peaks and the recent Pembrokeshire Residential (where I got best navigator award!), and socials.

I’ve truly enjoyed every hike, social, and residential I’ve attended and led, gaining valuable life and soft skills along the way. This experience has motivated me to give back to the club and contributing to shaping its future - because HIKING = FUN!

If I am elected as Routemaster. I aim to:

  • Midweek hikes to explore trails around London
  • Joint hikes with other UCL societies and London uni's hiking clubs
  • Participate in challenge walks/hikes in both inside and outside London and potentially create our own ones
  • Create a route form for club members to submit hiking trails that they have done that can potentially be added to our database and used on our weekend hikes to increase engagement with members
  • Create a public route database that we have hiked for both weekend and residentials, where we share our experiences and route maps in .gpx for club members to refer to, for improved accessibility
  • Conduct an updated audit and improve the current huge route database

I'm excited to contribute more to the London’s best university hiking club. If you have any questions,  reach out via email at declan.loo.23@ucl.ac.uk or Instagram (@declanloo).

Vote for me as your next Routemaster!! :).

Muneeb Aadil

Hi, I’m Muneeb, a first year PhD student in Statistics.

You may recognise me from the weekend hikes or the Pembrokeshire residential. Having been on multiple weekend hikes, I personally find spending a day away from the city buzz and making new friends along the way very refreshing. And I’d love to give back to the community by contributing in planning the weekend getaways. If elected, I plan to

  • retain our popular hiking destinations, so as to keep attracting a large number of students,
  • explore new hiking routes that we haven’t been to in the recent past, while ensuring a nice balance between challenging and beginner-friendly hikes,
  • and also look into the possibility of reviving camping trips if there’s feasibility. There used to be camping trips in the past and some people have registered interest, and I’m personally very excited about reviving this if feasible.

As someone originally from a city close to the Karakoram range in Pakistan, I’ve been very fortunate to hike in various peaks and alpline meadows in Northern Pakistan including the Kaghan Valley and the Swat Valley. Furthermore I have also hiked a bit in Bavaria (Germany) and Grindelwald (Switzerland). And I’m sure that my multi-day expedition experiences in these areas will help me plan exciting yet realistic weekend hikes catering to varying fitness levels, and I’m really excited & looking forward for a chance to do that with this club.
