I don’t think there’s any society at UCL that offers as much of a variety of dance styles and classes as Freestyle Dance Soc.

That in combination with the extremely welcoming and supportive atmosphere has made it one of - if not the BEST society and community in UCL 💯💯💯.

The people in this society have become some of my favorite people that I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. I want to make sure that everyone has fun in the society while making the community more accessible for people who might be a bit too intimidated by the idea of freestyle.

I want to organise even more events next year, so we can foster an even more welcoming and close-knit community of people that love to dance 💃💃💃!

I hope to see you in the committee again next year 🥰🥰🥰!

Jean Choi

As a first-year undergraduate with no prior street dance experience, I remember the warm welcome from the committee members and the family-like atmosphere at the Welcome Fair, the casual socials, and the taster sessions. These events introduced me to this vibrant community and gave me the confidence to explore more.

Initially, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to commit to free-style dancing as I first thought there would be barriers,  but the socials helped me realise how  fun and rewarding it could be. Meeting welcoming members, learning from experienced dancers, and connecting with others at these events made me want to be part of this amazing community. I want to create similar opportunities for beginners—helping them discover the joy of dance while fostering connections within the society. Whether through themed events, workshops, or social meet-ups, I hope to make the society as inclusive and engaging for everyone as it has always been.

Personally, some of my most memorable experiences include the Halloween cypher jam and casual socials, which inspired me to join more sessions by talking to different people and bonding through dance.

With experiences in organising student-led events, planning activities in sixth form, and contributing to my department’s EDI committee, I enjoy creating inclusive, enjoyable experiences. As Social Secretary, I would love to continue the amazing work of the current committee and ensure the society remains as welcoming as it was for me.
