Hello! I'm Nathan, and I'm running to be your DEI officer for next year! :) As a fresher, I remember being new to UCL and feeling overwhelmed by the pressure of uni, and joining societies wasn't even on my mind, but DramaSoc really helped in grounding me and figuring out who I was in a confusing time. It was the first time I had been on stage in over 2 years, and it led me to find my confidence again. While I loved doing shows, what I cherished most was the community that formed. They're like my second family, and I know many of you also find comfort and joy in doing silly (or serious!) acting with friends, so as DEI officer I would increase accessibility for freshers and people trying out acting for the first time. One idea I have is to host more freshers' shows later in term 1 to allow 1st years more chances to explore the society beyond the chaos of freshers' week and settling into uni life.
Being a bi person of colour, I was worried whether DramaSoc would be an accepting place, but I found it to be one where everyone can thrive and have fun, no matter their background, and I love how projects like Reclamation and the Pride showcase give everyone a chance to tell the stories they want to tell. As your DEI officer, you can trust me to continue supporting these events, and I'm always open to any and all ideas to make DramaSoc as inclusive as possible!
At the end of the day we're all here to have fun, and I'm determined to keep DramaSoc a safe space for that :))
