YO WHASS GUD

My name is Kevin – please call me Kev; I am a first-year history student with a focus on social and gender history. I'm looking forward to announcing my candidacy for Welfare Officer of the Board Game Society here at UCL. As I have found plenty of joy, friendship, and a sense of community in board games, it'll be my mission to make sure everyone feels the same way I did when first joining. Board games to me are more than just a hobby; they are a way to connect with others, a way to unwind and a way to take your mind off things. As Welfare Officer, it will be my mission to create a safe, welcoming and enjoyable environment, and below I will outline how I aim to do so.

As someone who initially struggled with friends at UCL, it will be a primary focus of mine to ensure that every week we have a space where members can come, leave their stress at the door, and enjoy some classic board games. From personal experience I know that Freshers Week can be incredibly stressful and worrying and to a point overwhelming, and although UCL does an amazing job at welcoming us, I believe Board Games Society should also do so.

Therefore I plan numerous 'Get To Know Us' sessions within the first initial weeks at UCL. My plan for these icebreaker sessions is simply to introduce them to the group, introduce them to some board games and make them aware of how our wonderful society is run. Furthermore, I plan to regularly, once a half term, send out a questionnaire on how people have felt
