Suhani Bapat

I am keen to run for the position of social secretary as I truly believe that creating a strong team atmosphere off the court, directly enhances gameplay on court, fostering better teamwork and motivation. I strive for socials to be inclusive for everyone, from competitive players to casual members, with the goal of building lasting friendships that extend beyond the court.

Having previously run my school’s badminton club, I am confident in my ability to run the weekly social badminton sessions, ensuring that players of all abilities feel engaged while also introducing new ideas to keep things fresh and exciting.

In addition, I have strong links with other UCL sports societies, opening up exciting opportunities for collaborative events such as joint sports nights and inter-society challenges which will allow for socialising across different groups.

Potential social ideas:

  • Badminton themed pub quizzes
  • Blindfolded badminton -  one blindfolded player and the other giving directions which can build trust and communication
  • Escape room challenge - perfect for team bonding
  • Inter-society tournaments

I believe I am well suited for this role as I am a friendly and approachable individual who is passionate about fostering a strong sense of community within the badminton club. With a creative and innovative approach, I have a range of unique social ideas which combined with strong organisational skills, ensures that all events will be well-planned, inclusive and enjoyable for everyone.

Skyla Fan

I am an active member of the badminton club and always hold a strong passion towards this sport. Since I've joined the society at the very first weeks of this academic year, I have participated in loads of social events and have kept good relationship with many other members. If I could be the social secretary, I would do my best to help the club flourish. As there are always new people joining this club, I would endeavour to accompany them, possibly reducing their sense of loneliness. I would also try to maximise the usage of timeslots so that as many people as possible could enjoy in their matches. Overall, I believe that my strong social and teamwork abilities could help the club to be more united and organised.

Terry Yee Qin Xuan

Hello everyone! I’m Terry, and I’m nominating myself for the position of Social Secretary. Though I only recently started playing badminton, I’ve quickly grown to love it—not just as a sport, but as a way to meet new people, have fun, and share great moments both on and off the court.

Badminton is more than just competition—it should be a welcoming space where everyone, regardless of skill level, can enjoy the game. However, I’ve noticed that our social sessions often suffer from imbalanced games and limited playtime, making it tough for beginners to fully enjoy. This is where I believe the Social Secretary should step in—to ensure sessions are well-organized, balanced, and inclusive for all.

What I’ll Bring to the Role

🏸 Fair & Engaging Social Sessions – Organizing well-structured sessions to ensure everyone gets quality game time.
🏸 Bridging the Skill Gap – Introducing simple guidance, pairing systems, and friendly mentoring to make games more enjoyable for all.
🏸 More Social Events Beyond Badminton – Hosting pub socials, collab with other societies and casual meetups to strengthen the club’s community and friendships.
🏸 A More Inclusive & Fun Atmosphere – Ensuring badminton remains a space where both beginners and experienced players feel welcome, supported, and motivated to play.

I’m passionate about making our badminton community more fun, friendly, and inclusive and if you believe in what I can bring to the role, please give me your vote 💙🏸

Kohen Yan

Hello! I am Kohen running for Social Secretary! I am a second year student reading Politics and International Relations and I am from Malaysia!

  • Favourite shot: forehand cross-court drop shot
  • Favourite discipline: men’s doubles
  • Fun fact: I’ve been playing with low tension strings because it’s so expensive to string a racket in London (I’m waiting until I get back to Malaysia!)

In the role of social secretary, I will do three things:

  1. Music! I will ensure that socials are fun and energetic with music!! Nothing better than vibing to classic pop songs while playing on court (as well as grooving to music on the sides of courts to keep warm in between games)
  2. Organised! I will ensure that our members are well informed about how the social sessions work and I will sort out the weekly allocations clearly every week. (NEW!) I will send out messages of the players list every week in the gc!
  3. Badminton WRAPPED! Working with the secretary, we will take more high-quality photos at our sessions and send out termly recaps so that you can catch some cool pictures of yourself playing badminton, whether it's a picture capturing smooth dive or a super high jump reaching for a smash!

And why me? I am a passionate badminton player that loves some good competition and sparring yet prioritises being friendly and welcoming to members from all skill-levels so that everyone has a great time at social sessions. (And like in my photo, I know the best places to eat after tiring badminton sessions!)

Lincoln Kwan

Badminton has always been a big part of my life, and I’m very glad that the Badminton Club has allowed me to continue enjoying the sport I love most. As a regular participant in weekly social sessions, I hope to take on a greater responsibility next year to foster a friendly and welcoming environment for everyone. I believe that the role of the social secretary is well-placed to realize my vision.

Outside of Badminton Club, I've participated in other UCL societies as a subcommittee member, which has further enriched my experiences of collaborating and working as a team, especially in the context of a completely student-run society.

I aim to improve the social aspect of the weekly sessions by encouraging playing with different people and making sure everyone gets a chance. Moreover, I propose improvements to the signup system such as adding a waitlist to allow for more efficient allocation of sessions, ensuring that spaces don't get wasted. After a fulfilling year as a member of the club, I'm very eager to embrace the challenge and further improve that experience for everybody.
