The RUMS tennis squads are very different to other tennis teams around the country. Much team bonding is done off the court through the tennis socials, and without a coach a great deal of teamwork goes into each training session to help improve one another. There is a strong sense of unity in the squads, and this is what makes RUMS tennis so special.
However, over the recent years, the RUMS tennis squads have unfortunately undergone several relegations. Even though we have good players, who perform exceptional in training, we have found winning matches consistently very difficult.
Having been an active member in the RUMS tennis men's 2s for the past two years, I have clearly seen where are weaknesses are and I am motivated to correct these in the coming year as captain.
What I plan to do as captain of men's 2s in 2024/25:
- Hold conversations with other team captains prior to training sessions to organise what will happen on each court during the 2 hours to ensure that no time is wasted during the session
- Keep track of the aspects of the tennis game that each squad member needs to improve upon, so that the team trainings can be used purposely to work on these 'weaknesses'
- Hold training sessions/practice matches on Wednesdays during social tennis when we don't have matches in order to simulate playing outside in more disturbing conditions
