Shilang Yang

After throwing myself into taekwondo this year, I have experienced first-hand some of the highs and lows that inevitably come with training and university life in general. I recognise the importance of having someone to talk to and I truly value all the people that have supported me so far. I am applying to be welfare officer because I want to take on that responsibility - to be the friendly face that others can turn to for help.

I understand that welfare involves looking after both physical and mental wellbeing. As a combat sport, injuries are commonplace and so my experience in basic life support and first aid will hopefully be useful. Additionally, I understand some of the feelings associated with training, competition and balancing a busy academic life with taekwondo. As a result, I believe I can empathise with those undergoing all sorts of challenges no matter how big or small they may seem.

I have really enjoyed being part of such a tight-knit community and regardless of the outcome, I look forward to spending another year at the club!

Hi! I’m Louise, a second year student heading gracefully into my final year. I started taekwondo at this club, as a hopeful white belt, and I owe you a lot! I grew a lot at here, and I still find some things a little scary, but this club always felt welcoming, teaching me so much and introducing beautiful friendships!!!

As your Welfare Officer, I will ensure that this club persists as encouraging and successful, a space where everyone is welcomed. I believe that working in a happy and supportive environment will lead us into greater success. I will working alongside our committee to provide the care and assistance everyone deserves, whether you have concerns regarding your physical health or your mental health.

I may not be the next generation’s doctor* but I am a friendly face who will always hear you out on any concerns you may have. I would love to continue the success of our Welfare Officers through the provisions of activities and outlets for us to come together, unwind, have fun, and support each other. We are the people who shape this team, we need everyone to be happy, healthy, and valued. It would be a privilege to keep you all in tip-top shape.

It has been such a privilege to be part of this community, and to have had the opportunity to learn from every one of you. It would be an honour to be given the chance to give back to the club that made my life here at UCL so positive!

*I’m still super duper caring and attentive<3
