Hello everyone! I am Jia and I would love to be your Global Surgery Chair next year. As an aspiring surgeon, I am passionate about introducing medical students to careers in global surgery and find ways for students to create an impact in this field. Through my international neurosurgery research project and my experience presenting my research poster at the Incision Global Surgery Conference 2023, I have developed skills in leadership, teamwork and communication which are key to this role. As a member of the neurosurgery core committee last year, I worked with our team to bring back our annual International Neurology and Neurosurgery Conference so I am aware of all the logistics and organisation that is needed to bring such a large scale event to life and I hope to use these skills to create a UCL Global Surgery Conference. This field is one that is not discussed much at medical school and I hope to use this opportunity to shed light on the importance of humanitarian work in the field of surgery.

My aims for this year:

  • Create a UCL Global Surgery Conference with exciting workshops and world renown speakers
  • Create a Global Surgery subcommittee to help organise large scale events for students
  • Continue running Global Surgery lectures and have more scheduled throughout the year
  • Promote shadowing and research opportunities to students
  • Continue to collaborate with other London university societies to bring about inter-university events and workshops
