Alexander Macdonald

In this society, I am generally known as a bit of a moron that loves to have a drink. What many however don’t see is my commitment and love for the athletic side of this society. Even before UCL I have been to weekly dry slope sessions and competitions for many years – leading my school’s second team to 3rd place in the English nationals. After a couple years hiatus from dry slopes and a season instructing skiers of all levels in Georgia with a quick attempt at the Freeride World Tour, I am back for more. Despite taking over 3 hours from home to reach the slope, I have attended nearly every training and competition so far this year, which is a testament to my dedication. Having progressed from 2nd team to having a consistent spot in 1st team, I am confident in my determination to improve and compete, and as Ski Captain I will share my spirit of both fun and determination. I have already helped bring about significant change through lobbying for improved relations with KCL through discussion with both presidents, which has saved the club money and created a friendlier and more enjoyable environment for everyone. With enough rivalries in this world already, I will continue to encourage better relations with KCL through more joint training sessions. I will make team selection fairer, giving our promising skiers a better chance to progress through to more advanced teams and lastly, I will introduce team jackets: creating a greater sense of belonging and care within our teams.

Emily Hannan

Hi, I'm Emily and I am a first year Human sciences student. I have been a part of this society and ski team for the past 2 years now. skiing, for me, has been an amazing outlet while being at university and I have met some amazing people through the sport. I am currently ski captain and I have enjoyed every minute of it, so that is why I have decided to apply again as I know, from experience, that there is more I could do this following year.

I have been skiing since I was 2 years old and have been racing since I was 14. During my gap year I spent a ski season getting my BASI 1 and 2 and two weeks before that helping out at ski racing camp organising the racers, shadowing lessons and helping pull and set courses.

My aims for next year are to continue working with coaches to help improve technical abilities, have the opportunity to race with timings and having focus points for each session. I want to hold more beginners' sessions from the start of the year, with progression courses throughout the rest of the year. This will allow for more people to be able to get involved with the society. I also want to implement trials for teams to increase competition and motivate people through the course of the year. Finally, I want to have some joint freestyle and ski race sessions, so people have access to try both.

Despite all of this, my main goal for the year is for people to have fun and want to come to training sessions and view the sport the same way I do.

Sophia Engelen

Hey everyone, I’m Sophia and I hope to be your ski captain next year! I’ve been skiing since I was three and racing since I was seven. I was also captain of my previous team, so I do have some experience organizing training, setting courses, dealing with race officials and making sure no one misses their race runs.

For next year, I hope to create more of a team feeling and increase racing/training participation. As captain, I would suggest the following:

  • Run trials at the start of the year to create more fixed teams (they won’t be entirely set in stone, so there is always a chance to move up!)
  • Move practice earlier in the week to encourage attendance at Wednesday socials
  • Acquire funding for newer equipment because the skis you are on makes a huge difference in your racing!!
  • Optional tuning clinics to teach members how to service their skis (a true life skill)
  • Video training runs at practice (for those who want) and do video analysis to help everyone improve their technique - seeing your mistakes vs. hearing about them is very different
  • Petition the student union for a trophy case because we will be needing one!!!

I promise to advocate for our team and won’t let Loughborough cheat us out of a win ever again! I want to keep the fun, warm and welcoming environment that I felt when I joined the team, and want to ensure everyone’s ideas are heard, so please feel free to contact me at [email protected]

Sebastian Bayles

Snowsports have been a part of my life since I started professionally racing 8 years ago. My dedication to the sport has prevailed throughout many years of competing and I've grasped the challenges skiers face, regardless of experience. I am a committed and organised team member, proven by my years spent training all year round, my academic commitment and to hold a job down simultaneously.

I am sociable, approachable, and eager to meet people and offer advice or guidance to anyone seeking it. I aim to create a fun and supportive environment where individuals receive personalised guidance to enhance their skills and enjoy themselves.

Aims:

- Potential First and Second Team Race Training at Sandown Park with Ex-Olympic racers turned to coaches before high-level competitions such as DOME, BUDS and AJAM to boost team cooperation, confidence and hence skill level.

- Ensure all sports equipment such as poles, and shinpads are race-equipped with necessary guards and protection, as well as ensure the fitting is correct to team members.

- Advancing on the beginner sessions available at this year by introducing intermediate sessions at as well, including training and experience for those who want to partake in racing at Gosling with Ex-British Ski Academy coaches.

I excel under pressure, confronting challenges directly and fostering a positive atmosphere while constantly striving to reach my full potential and assisting others in reaching theirs.
