Kai Phing Yapp

I am applying for this role as managing the finance of an organisation (or in this case a society), has always been in line with my responsibility interests.

As the head student of my high school, alongside taking the treasurer role for the counselling trainee committee, I believe I have the ability to manage my time well and keep on top of multiple tasks whilst meeting deadlines. My previous role as treasurer also gave me a first hand experience at managing finances so being the treasurer for NatSci society would allow me to not only learn new skills but at the same time hone in and polish up previously learnt ones.

I hope to be able to contribute to the NatSci society as the treasurer to the extent that the role of responsibility encompasses, if I get the role. I look forward to collaborating with other committee members on projects and interacting with society members.

As a member of the society this past year, I have experienced first-hand the variety of academic and social events pulled off by the current committee, and have come to appreciate the effort and organisation behind it all. In such a varied degree as ours, I have found that these events and the support available played an essential part in getting to know my peers, as well as opening up professional opportunities I hadn’t previously considered. I think that to be able to provide such a space for everyone is important, and that moving into my second year here, I would love to be a part of the process by helping in any way I can.

I am applying for the position of treasurer as I am competent at handling numbers (taking Physics with Maths and Stats) and have had some experience working with fairly large sums of money for the Oxfam bookshop I used to volunteer at. I am also very comfortable working both independently and with a team, and feel that I could act as the link between the Students’ Union Finance team and the society, whilst keeping up open communication with other committee members. Most importantly, I believe that my attention to detail and organisational skills will aid me in my efforts to manage and provide funding for our events, and ensure that every expense is accounted for, every membership fee put to good use. I am eager to do well and hope that this will be a chance to take on some responsibility and become a more active member of our community.
