This is the first year as an UCL student and also my first year to be a part of the hiking society, but it is not the first year that I have been on different trails.

I have found the joy of being in the nature with a nice group of peers and want to help in making this atmosphere everlasting and make it even better. I am confident that with my first-aid training and pass experience in technical equipment ( ice axes, crampons, sat phones etc.) I fit the position of safety and equipment officer very well. I will be utilizing my experience as both a hiker and a police volunteer to help in properly accessing any risk that might get in the activities's way.

For the past few months, I have got to know many of us in the society and have become very close friends. I am willing to do my best to serve and protect these people and work for the interest of each individual. I am looking forward to join the committee and have myself contributing more and more.

Surendra Rana

Hello there, I’m Surendra, a second-year Geology student!

This year I have participated in some wonderful hikes across the country and met a wide variety of wonderful people across the club. Having served as Safety & Equipment for the 23/24 year, it would be wonderful to continue with this role!

Over the year, we’ve had a steadfast routine where we typically employ a more restrained approach over the winter (due to a variety of reasons, including for safety) and a more relaxed one for summer (more sunlight!) - I hope to continue our regular weekend hikes, make them inclusive to new hikers and provide tough challenges to those with experience.

Other plans on my mind include:

  • Reviving some old hikes and perhaps establishing some new ones!
  • More informal hikes over the summer (I won’t be particularly far from London!)
  • Getting a Hiking Club megaphone, and some pliers for cutting down loose thorns/branches

Hopefully, the coming year will bring about more success for the club, our schedule is quite substantial and accommodating for weekend hikers, preparing and organisation for this and ensuring club equipment is responsibly held, maintained, and updated is a lot of work but very rewarding.
