to prevent the society from disintegrating

Fung Lok Lam

I’m Fung Lok, 1st year Geographer and guitar lover! Enjoying genres from Blues to Indie, I discovered the guitar’s wonderful emotional range. As a learner that struggled, and with my experience in language tutoring in college, I’m committed to run for Welfare Officer.

I believe democratised learning helps build a positive mindset and learning environment. I also believe guitar learning should be an enjoyable process. As such, I'd discuss with other Committee members, to aim for 4 key achievements:

  • Collab with Live Music Soc bringing in skilled guitar tutors
  • Guitar genres are very diverse! And we all have preferences. As such, I intend for 2 weekly sessions: one following a regular curriculum, the other to learn digestible songs from a genre you decide via voting!
  • Other than UCL venues, I advocate outdoor spaces eg Gordon Square for organic, interactive classes.
  • Small peer-mentoring groups. Other than tutor-led groups, I believe peer-mentoring offers a great chance to befriend other guitarists. This can extend technical and emotional support beyond the classroom, making learning less lonely.
  • Therapy to discuss struggles. Whether it's privately or small groups, I’m devoted to spend time listening. Through these discussions, regardless of issues in learning environment or resources, I’ll reflect your needs to the Committee for solutions.

All in all, I'm passionate to explore the guitar alongside other society members, vote for me to enhance your Guitar Society

Nicole Britto

Hi, my name is Nicole and I'm running for welfare officer! I've loved learning to play electric guitar over the last few years and it is something I really want to commit to next year. It's important to me to have a community of people that share similar interests, and I want to give back to the society by creating an inclusive and accessible environment for our members, especially for those just starting to play.

Dila Pala

My name is Dila Pala and I am a first-year Sociology and Politics of Science student. I am originally from Turkey, but I lived in Spain and attended an international school for about 7 years before moving here. I have been playing guitar since I was 10 years old, with my preference being acoustic fingerstyle. For these reasons, even though I may be new to the UCL community, the two things I am confident about are guitars and my ability to understand all kinds of people. Both of which are skills that I believe are quite significant for this role as it implies I can assist in any sort of lesson planning or teaching, as well as understand and be an efficient communicator of the needs of this society whether for funding, event planning, etc. whenever necessary.

Prior to even receiving my offer to study here, I researched what societies there were and was ecstatic to find out there is a society specifically for guitar, where I could bond with others who shared my love for this instrument. The possibility that it may be disaffiliated shattered me as we have only gotten a chance to have one lesson so far during my time at this school. Personally, I am not ready to give up on this community quite yet, and believe I could make a great welfare officer if given the chance, which is why I’m standing.

Sun Yu

Mainly nominating myself to protect Guitar Soc at all costs,

If there are any other candidates, feel free to vote for them

If I get elected tho, I'll make sure I look out for everyone in the society (I do have a Mental Health First Aid certificate after all)
