Delilah Magazine: Editor-in-Chief

Hi, I'm Nicole and I'm running for Editor in Chief. I'm passionate about all kinds of music, and love going to gigs as I play a lot of music myself. Writing for the print this year was a lot of fun - it's a really nice space for people to collaborate together and express their interests. I would like to be more involved in running the magazine as I've enjoyed reading everyone's articles and discovering new artists, and I want to dedicate time next year to work on a creative project. I'm friendly, innovative and keen to contribute new ideas!

Those who write about music are storytellers. Indeed, they do not erect statues of critics, but critics are key in aiding the navigation of a seemingly endless musical landscape, filtering through the noise and shaping the cultural narratives. As such, student-led publications such as Delilah have a vital role to play in not only providing insightful commentary and analysis in its features, but also bridging the gap between artists and their audience in an era of unprecedented technological evolution that challenges the industry as we know it.

As for my experience, over the past academic year I have contributed to the Law Society’s flagship publication as well as holding a staff writer position for their fortnightly newsletter. In addition to this, I have worked with Delilah on design for the upcoming issue, giving me valuable insight into the process of taking the thoughtful, insightful work of contributors and presenting it in a way that does it justice.

With no intention to sound banal, it would be a gross omission to not mention my near obsession with music; from the CD’s my mum would play on the drive to school, notably Jeff Buckley’s Grace, to the first songs I learnt to play and perform on the bass guitar, music has left a truly indelible mark on my life.

Joan Didion said we tell ourselves stories in order to live and, of course, this extends to the stories we tell through our music.

Hey! My name is Maria, you might know me from my article on Baby Keem (and some others to be published!) or my secret editing on some of your articles and I’m now hoping to become your editor-in-chief!  

This year, Delilah has managed to take up an enormous place in my heart. One thing about me is that I like to talk. As someone who loves music wholeheartedly, that is usually my topic of choice. Having spent a lot of time pushing my album interpretations onto my friends, there came a point when I wanted to share my love with more people who admire the industry as much as I do. It’s why I’ve wanted to work in journalism for a while and you can imagine how happy I was when I found Delilah Magazine. 

I am running for editor-in-chief as someone who is grateful for how much Delilah has given her in the last few months and wishes to give back. I don't have enough characters to describe how fulfilled I feel when writing about music (hence I always made the questionable decision to make Delilah article deadlines my priority). I’m twice as grateful to have edited for the magazine, as reading on such a variety of topics has me amazed at how vast the industry is and how little I really know, despite being open minded in terms of what I listen to. Plus, the writing skills my course has taught me and the leadership and organization skills I acquired from preparing and chairing debates for years will be of great help. I would be very grateful for this opportunity and appreciate any support!
