Hello, My name is Dewnith, and i plan on running to be your president for the next year. I'm currently in my second year of BA classical archaeology and I play the guitar. I have been a member of the society for well over a year now and I have what it takes to lead it into the oncoming academic year.
I will focus on making ASN an even more open and exciting place to express Asian heritage and culture, both through food, media and games. By focusing on more neglected areas of the wide range of cultures, I hope to highlight them to all people interested in the society. I also hope to produce more interactive things for the society to do in between activities, such as questionnaires and polls. I will also endeavor to facilitate connections with external uni’s pan-asian societies, and expand connections within ucl, with even more societies.
I have had many experiences leading clubs and societies in my college, including the school council, so i’m a competent leader and it would be my complete pleasure to be your president in the coming year :))
In my First Year, ASN has given me so much power and pride in celebrating my Asian heritage. The infectiously bubbly and welcoming energy emulated across the room during my first ASN event overwhelmed me with a comfort I didn’t know I needed at the start of university. As President, I intend to continue cultivating this home-away-from-home energy for our club next year!
As President, I intend to focus on two things:
- Increase the frequency of events by collaborating with other clubs to host events!
I love how close-knit our club is, and also understand that this comes with constraints in human power. By collaborating with other clubs (bbt soc, Bhangra soc), we'll be able to increase the scale of event planning whilst meeting new people :)
- Incorporate a diverse range of Asian cultures in our events by integrating even more South, Southeast and Western Asian cultures!
To achieve this, I aim to first increase club visibility (e.g. pop-up cultural game booths on main quad!) = Get more members representing different cultures = Take event suggestions from members at the start of term = Increase cultures represented at our events!
As for previous experience, I spearheaded a tutoring programme for underprivileged kids disproportionately affected by COVID, as well as a financial literacy programme for my secondary school. So, whilst this will be my first time leading a cultural club, I am confident that with our members, we can make ASN a thriving and welcoming space for all! :)
