ABACUS has been an incredible community that has helped me build strong friendships through a range of events that were hosted by the committee which I would love to recreate for others. Having grown up in China, and moving to the UK at a young age, I was brought up in an environment that embraced both the British and Chinese cultures; through engaging in the ABACUS society, I was able to carry forward that aspect of my life into my university experience, with the addition of many more cherished memories. Owing to my experience, I am eager to assist others through the role of vice president of the society in embracing and participating in fun and engaging events that unite the two cultures. Having taken up multiple different leadership roles including being the first-year rep for my course at university, I am confident that I would be able to demonstrate a strong dedication to society through innovative contributions, and through my friendly and talkative personality, I hope to bring a lively ambience to the team. I believe I would be able to foster a strong sense of teamwork and collaboration within the team, as whilst I am a very chatty person, not to worry, I also enjoy listening to the views and ideas of others and seeking alternatives that everyone is happy with. It has been an amazing year being part of the community and I would love to be considered for the role of vice president!

Emily Yang

Hello! I am Emily, a biomedical sciences student running for Vice President.

I joined the society because ABACUS brought a variety of unique events that are both inclusive and culturally friendly, and it was thrilling to meet people here which enriched my fresher experience.

As the Chairperson of the Student Council at high school, I believe that I have the experience for effective communication and time-management, thus suitable as VP, who acts as the mediator between the president and the committee.

Being a First Year Rep this year, I successfully organised the karaoke event and am keen on initiating more, smaller, inter-uni events such as eating-out, going-out to a theme park etc. which would be also part of VP’s responsibility.

During my final year of high school, I was the President of the Environmental Society and initiated a £20,000 Greenhouse Project, which shows my dedication and organisational skills. With my experience being the House Captain who had to look after hundreds of students from different backgrounds, I am confident to help the society’s welfare and hear members’ voices too.

I will ensure that there is a smooth communication within our committee and will constantly provide support to our president and look after the rest of our team. I hope that through this, I can give something back to ABACUS and everyone can get the most out of this society too!

Marcus Siu

Hey everyone, my name is Marcus and I’m running for vice-president this year. I spent the year participating in various ABACUS events and I can safely say that this society is central to some of my favourite UCL memories so far. Having met people from a variety of different backgrounds through this society, I have seen how the greatest strength of ABACUS is its diversity. As vice-president I hope to make sure that all ABACUS members are able to experience the same sense of welcoming and belonging.

I understand that one of the main responsibilities of being vice-president is planning the numerous social dinners and organising other events throughout the year. In my experience, the greatest strength of these dinners has been the opportunities to socialise and connect with other society members, and I will strive to ensure that the dinners will be organised such that these opportunities are afforded to everyone who participates. This aim also extends to the wider array of casual events I would like to organise, where I am hopeful that there will be something for everyone.

Having led the Overseas Council at my previous school, I have learnt essential time-management, teamwork, and communication skills. My experiences have taught me the importance of maintaining a cohesive team and I hope to use my skills to both support the president in their duties and be the key communicator between president and the rest of the committee - ensuring that ABACUS will continue to flourish.
