Hi, I’m Ayman! I’m currently undertaking an internship with Moorfields Eye Hospital and have seen first-hand how the field of ophthalmology encompasses the dynamism of medicine. This year I chaired UCL MedTech’s AI in Medicine conference which had a turnout of 200+ and have greatly improved upon my organisational and interpersonal skills, as well as unique connections to titans of the medical and AI field which I hope to exploit.
As Ophthalmology Chair I would like to achieve the following:
- Collaborate with Moorfields Eye Hospital: I hope to use my unique connections to their institute be the point of call to foster relationships between their specialists and our members. They are a world class research institute and I believe they represent an untapped resource from SurgSoc.
- Increase interdisciplinary approaches: Ophthalmology is often seen as specialist but conversely is a field that is undergoing radical change, for example, through the integration of AI. I hope to collaboration with other societies in our seminar series to explore this.
- Strengthen outreach: I aim to establish shadowing schemes between ophthalmologists and students as well as spotlight the charitable work that Moorfields undertakes. Shadowing schemes will culminate in a poster presentation style conference hosted by SurgSoc, with prizes to be won.
I have really enjoyed being a member of SurgSoc this year and I am determined to take on this role with everything I have!

Considering that our university is affiliated to a world-class ophthalmology institution, it is unfortunate that our society is not engaged with Moorfield’s Eye Hospital. I am driven to establish a strong relationship with the hospital and its associated research institute, with the intent of arranging opportunities for our members to excel in the field of ophthalmology. To this purpose, I plan to leverage the connections I obtained through my research at the Institute of Ophthalmology and my experience as a current member of the subcommittee to achieve the following goals:
- Set up clinical and surgical workshops using Moorfield’s training simulators.
- Continue our seminar series led by prominent ophthalmologists and increase engagement through increased publicity and in person events.
- Reintroduce the Duke Elder exam revision series.
- Establish a mentoring scheme that pairs students with experts from Moorfield’s.
- Collaborate with Ophthalmology societies from other universities to establish an in person national undergraduate conference hosted in London.
To summarize, I want to make this specialty more accessible to aspiring ophthalmologists and help them nurture their passion for this field. I believe I have the drive and skills necessary to lead this subcommittee to success.
Hey everyone, my name is Lucian Najman, you might know me from RUMSFC or RUMS tennis or from anywhere else to be honest, or maybe not at all and I will be in 4th year next year.
I’m running for this position because I want to organise events and talks for medical students of all years to participate and learn a little bit more about this fascinating specialty. I plan on securing shadowing opportunities in addition to practical events next year for people to sign up to. I have previously held positions on the ENT, Orthopaedics & trauma and WINS committees, also helping organise the OMFS & Plastics as well as this years WINS conference and am more than excited for potentially becoming the ophthalmology chair. I hope to count on you guys, and let’s make next year legendary for all the ophthalmologists of the future.
