Karthig Thillaivasan

Hello, my name is Karthig Thillaivasan and I would like to run to be a Media Officer for UCL Surgical Society. Firstly, having been media officer for SurgSoc 2022/23, I have experience in time management and making SurgSoc posts in an organised manner. I will be able to use this experience to improve posts and make talks even more engaging to as many students. I have also been in media for iNUGSC and so have maximum exposure to post creation on a regular basis. Having attended and organised many events, I gather that the success of every event is heavily dependent on spreading enthusiasm and engagement. Some of my greatest skills are communication and teamwork, which will be useful to liaise with other university societies and bring innovative ideas to the table, utilising various online platforms to enhance publicity. I have also created promotional material for SurgSoc subcomms. Furthermore, having been a member of the Computer Graphics Team at school, I have exposure to various photo/video editing software and so would be able to channel this expertise to enhance the visual and promotional aspects of events, through management of social media and website content. I am familiar with the innovative marketing strategies employed by SurgSoc. It would be a privilege to be part of this amazing society and I would be very grateful if you could vote for me and I will ensure to be a dedicated Media Officer, working hard to design promotions and raise awareness of organised events.

It would be an absolute privilege to be your media officer for the year,

This year I have undertaken the role of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Chair, something which has been an invaluable experience. One of the aspects I enjoyed most about my time as chair was the communications work involved.

Be this update emails, social media posts, or communicating with other societies, I feel this is a role that I am well suited to due to both my time-management skills, and personable nature. Moreover, I am passionate about media's importance in pushing our society even further, exposing more people to our work, and engaging the next generation of surgeons.

Some ways I would take us into the future

  • Creating a robust mailing list, with specific chains for specialities, ensuring high attendance at all events
  • Regular social media posts, about our events, but also other relevant developments including social media takeovers
  • Ensure deadlines are adhered to, giving us adequate time to advertise, and ensure access and attendance
  • Increase our affiliations with other societies across UCL and other medical schools, increasing event attendance by increasing our exposure
  • Timely management of social media inboxes, these are often the easiest way for our members to access us and ask questions, highlighting the importance of consistent engagement.
  • Improve our social media branding, ensuring all our pages are coherent, giving us a creative and recognisable presence!

Thank you reading
