Sign Language Society: President

Hello! It’s nice to meet you, my name is Batool. 

I am the current Vice President of Sign Language society. Hopefully you have met me in the recent movie social or sign language classes :) 

I want to run for President because I LOVE sign language. It’s been a pleasure to attend sign language classes this year and being a part of organising classes, deaf awareness sessions and social events. This society offers me insights and creates empathy and awareness of the challenges a hearing-impaired person may face on a daily basis. We have wonderful events: the weekly BSL classes, ASL tasters, deaf awareness sessions and regular socials. Through my presidency, I want to empower the campaign and raise more awareness of sign language. 

My aims as President: 

• Organise some casual social meet-ups to revise class content (hopefully in Term 3!)
• Empowerment of hearing-impaired persons through more deaf awareness sessions with different societies across UCL 
• Potentially organise speaker events about sign language awareness and ongoing research at UCL’s DCAL (Deafness, Cognition and Language) centre 
• Start volunteering opportunities where we can place society members in a position where we introduce sign language to the public.
