I am a second-year student and this is my second year in this committee, now as co-head of communication.
As many of you, I am no stranger to adversity and have learnt the hard way that personal welfare is a necessity. Hence, I want to dedicate the next year to shaping an environment that continuously promotes our mental and physical health (which academic ambition often drives us to overlook). I am also an international student (I grew up in Portugal and Venezuela) so I am especially passionate about addressing this group’s hardships.
A few ideas…
- Daily impact ⇨ welfare podcast, stand-up comedy nights, journal and book club, nature walks with picnics.
- International students ⇨ international food fair, extending international freshers’ events for latecomers.
- RUMS families ⇨ live scoreboard of competitions (bake-offs, bingo, zumba) + freedom to change/keep families in the future.
- Friendlier study spaces ⇨ photo mural of memorable events at Cruci.
- Transparency ⇨ survey students’ welfare to establish committee goals.
- Holiday spirit ⇨ movies with hot-chocolate, chocolate egg design.
- Collaborating with club officers ⇨ meetings, monthly social media spotlights.
- Community ⇨volunteering and tea evenings boosting welfare outside uni.
- Welfare week add-ins ⇨ sewing workshop, safety kit diy, ED fundraiser.
I am here to foster honest conversations, listen, share my own coping tools, and help all cohorts. My job is to shape your year to your
Hey Everyone!
It’s Altay (he/him), running for Welfare VP. Through my time on the sub-committee for Welfare and leading Kinesis Magazine, I have provided and maintained spaces for Welfare to flourish through continued efforts to support all our students.
As election season comes upon us, there will be a lot of messages and social media posts stating why you should vote for a specific purpose. I wish to make my campaign a personal and heartfelt one so, if you would like to ever contact me about any questions, please reach out to me on [email protected].
What I aim to do next year?
- Representation - Ensuring our welfare subcommittee has a panel that represents all the medical students.
- Reintroduction of the Themes - Providing updated resources to support students with a number of Welfare related topics.
- Structuring Support - Providing detailed approaches on how to use the Raising Concerns platform rather than superficial review of the services during Freshers’ Week.
- Group Decision Making - When reviewing changes to student Welfare, ensuring all medical school afiliated societies are involved in shaping future policy.
- Wider Educational Support - Work alongside our medical teaching societies and our RUMS VP for Academics to ensure our out of lecture support is tailored to your needs.
- Tackling the Culture - All Welfare and RUMS affiliated committee members undertake Welfare and Active Bystander Training to ensure we are the champions of Welfare.

Hi! I'm Eti, a second-year student at UCLMS and a devoted member of the Welfare subcommittee. Medical School can feel unbelievably overwhelming at times. Annoyingly, I can't banish CPSAs or the many stresses of UCLMS. However, as Welfare VP, I'll try my best to help amplify your voices on a RUMS-wide basis so that together, we can make UCLMS a warmer, friendlier place for you AND future generations.
My main goals will be:
- To create a comprehensive guidebook to RUMS, helping freshers know where to access well-being resources and where to find support. The goal is to empower freshers with the information they need, letting them enjoy university worry-free.
- To encourage more people to report sexual harassment within RUMS clubs by clarifying the (often scary and confusing) Raising Concerns framework. I want everyone to know what to expect when a form is submitted.
- To increase the presence of RUMS Welfare on Instagram and the RUMS website, consolidating the resources that help improve our lives at UCLMS. I'll work intimately with our EDI subgroups to achieve this.
- To host bi-monthly office hours, where anyone can speak to me in person to suggest ideas, help escalate issues or have a productive chat about all things welfare! Anyone can contribute!
Being part of RUMS Welfare and the EDI LGBTQIA+ sub-group has been a highlight of Medical School. As Welfare VP, I hope to continue amplifying voices, strengthening bonds and working on the issues that matter most to you!
