Tomás Quintino Gouveia

Hello members,

As someone who has extensively searched for career opportunities for myself, having researched positions in several organisations and the platforms available for this effect, I have formed a view of the methods necessary.

Several experiences have given me skills I believe I could put to work in the benefit of this society’s members through being a Career Officer. Matching candidates to job roles that fit their skill sets and interests has been an undertaking in the past, giving me experience to carry out the important role that I am applying for. Further, given previous positions, I have been able to develop my skills in contacting organisations and businesses.

As Career Officer, I would keep two focal points in mind:

Members’ Interests - For there to be relevant and interesting opportunities available to the members of the society, it is crucial for the officer to have a clear idea of the ambitions and interests of the members involved. This is why I would actively reach out to members, giving me the ability to focus my efforts on the most relevant fields.

Diversity - For many, interests in diplomacy can be varied and unspecified. This is why I will work to ensure a wide range of opportunities in diverse organisations and positions, including possible positions in international organisations, think-tanks and more.

Thank you and I look forward to working with y’all

David T Schmidt

My goal as a careers officer would be to create a supportive and informative environment that encourages Diplomacy Society members to pursue their career aspirations in the field of diplomacy and international relations. My experience participating in MUN conferences, such as LIMUN, EYPUK, and Harvard WorldMUN, has given me a strong understanding of the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in this field, and I am excited to share this knowledge with others.

Here are some specific ideas I have in mind:

  1. Building upon existing events, and increasing the number of events featuring professionals from various fields, such as diplomacy, international organizations, NGOs, and academia, allowingmembers to learn more about potential career paths and network with professionals.
  2. Creating and curating resources for members, including lists of internships and job openings, advice on cover letter writing, and information on graduate programs, which would be accessible to Diplomacy Society members via social media channels and newsletters.
  3. Establishing a mentoring program where graduates can mentor current students on politics and IR, providing a valuable opportunity for members to receive guidance from professionals in the diplomacy field.
  4. Collaborating with the UCLUNA and organising workshops to help members develop valuable skills in diplomacy and international relations careers, including public speaking, negotiation, and debate skills.
