Election post
Having trained in BJJ for 16 months, I understand beginners' struggles when they start this sport. I have seen the different kinds of problems that arise. Beginners can get easily discouraged and injured due to spazzing. With this experience, I would like to channel it to help peers in the first year of university.
I started training BJJ back in Singapore where I was taught good technique and habits beats strength, cardio and physical willpower. I wish to encourage the technical element of jiu-jitsu during rolling as this would be beneficial for everyone involved. Additionally, I wish to promote good habits when training. BJJ is unique compared to many other martial arts as we can train at the highest intensity safely so long as proper respect for the rules and our training partner is upheld. There have been moments when I have witnessed beginners grow intimidated because their partners were overwhelming them with strength. Encouraging technique and respect for the system would help make the sport more inclusive while improving everyone's skillset.
Additionally, I have attended social events run by UCL BJJ and as a first-year rep, I could act as a friendly face during these occasions to ease any awkwardness new members may have. I would also look to organise competitions for beginners and first years. These events are meant to be fun, which is what the emphasis of learning BJJ should be.
BJJ is a challenging sport, let's make it more accessible with a vote for me!
