Being a successful rower is not just about technique, physical effort and putting down the hours in the erg shed. It's about community, friendship, and that sense of belonging that sets that fire in your heart each time you get in a boat. My year as Novice Captain will be about building family and unbreakable bonds, something I will put my heart and soul into achieving alongside my close friend Freja.
My main goals will be:
- To bring the social focus of our club away from drinking by organising more frequent non-drinking socials at my home. I'll also aim to reframe certain aspects of sports night so that all freshers feel equally valued, regardless of whether they choose to drink.
- Ensure RUMSBC is immediately apparent as a safe and inclusive space for everyone. Visibility and transparency are paramount, so I'll create a Novice Handbook with rowing terminology, an in-depth rundown of the club's committee, and ways to access support.
- Organise drop in-sessions alongside our inclusivity officer to help address the needs of all freshers. My main aims here are to help create more varied clothing and increase awareness of prayer times for all captains.
Ultimately, RUMSBC is about rowing - I'll try my best to help my freshers become accomplished, safe rowers who have a burning passion for the sport. I can't wait to continue shaping the future of this club alongside the rest of the committee! I hope you can all trust me with this massive undertaking!
Lots of love,
Eti.
