Anika Cheng

Hi, I'm Anika! I'm from Hong Kong and I'm currently studying Chemistry. While I'm no Olympic athlete, sports have been my favourite way to make friends and meet new people from all backgrounds while hitting some balls to destress at the same time. As former volleyball captain of my high school team, I know what makes a good sporting friendly event and I have experience waking up early before school to book courts for me and my friends to play on, and having to refresh the page nonstop to fight to book a court in a good location!

However, I also know that sports can be intimidating to some, especially beginners. I've played in mixed tournaments with player much older and more experienced than I, and I've felt extremely out of depth and stressed in those experiences, which is why I'd strive to make ABACUS sports events fun, friendly, and welcoming to all, no matter the skill level; the sports events I host would be a safe place for people to meet up in a pressure free environment and try out different sports and make friends and destress. I'm also open to suggestions for sports events, so if anyone has ideas, feel free to contact me anytime and I'll make it happen!

Since this role means being welfare officer as well, I'm always here for anyone who needs it, be it to chat, talk about struggles, help you cope with stress (believe me, I know things can get stressful), or just to help out with any questions you might have on uni life in general :)

Gerald Tan

Hey guys I'm Gerald, a 1st year Mechanical Engineering Student and I'm standing for the role of Sports and Welfare Officer. This role will allow me to take advantage of not only my avid interest in sports, but moreover to build on from my Leadership Roles from the past.

As a keen participant in ABACUS events, I intend to introduce a good balance between social and sporting activities. This is to encourage those who aren't too involved with, perhaps clubbing, to go out of their comfort zone and form a new community through sports. I am a huge advocate of listening to feedback to ensure that we are hosting inclusive and original events to display ABACUS' sporting side.

I consider myself to be experienced in the planning and overseeing of events having done so in my 2 years of Military Service in the Singapore Armed Forces. The hardships put me in unfamiliar environments, prompting me to adapt and improvise in times of adversity. The responsibilities given to me during my tour of duty has forged me into a competent leader.

More about myself, I am in the Singapore National Fencing Team, as well as UCL's 1st Team. Having competed overseas across the globe, it has given me great insight into the realm of competitive sports event. On the more casual side, I am currently in charge of the football for Singapore Society.

Overall, I want to make Sporting events an appealing platform for members of ABACUS and through your vote of confidence, I hope to make an impact on ABACUS!

Nyree Marsh

Hi everyone, my name is Nyree and I'm a 1st year Arts & Sciences student running for sports secretary and welfare officer!! I'm UK born and raised but am Malaysian Chinese!!

Joining ABACUS has been a fundamental reason as to why I have had such a good time socially during my first year at UCL; I have met so many cool people and made some amazing friends! Therefore I would love to give back and be a part of the society's development and growth!

Even though I am not the most athletically gifted, I am a big sports enthusiast and believe that taking part in sports is one of the best (sober) social activities! I currently social media manage for the UCL table tennis society, so I already have experience contributing to a committee, in particular a sports one! I would love to help diversify the range of sports events that UCL ABACUS offers, for those who want to play competitively and socially!! (perhaps even a table tennis x ABACUS crossover??) Additionally, I have actively participated in This Girl Can events and think working with this campaign would be a great way to increase female participation in ABACUS sports events!!

Inclusivity and safety are such important factors when running a society, and since this role also includes being welfare officer, it would be my number one priority to look after everyone's wellbeing. I'm super easy-going and open-minded, and would love everyone to feel comfortable in approaching me if there are any safety or well-being concerns :)

Michelle Y Hu

To organise some bomb sporting events with some bomb people :)

I'm standing for Sport Secretary because I genuinely enjoy organising and planning (no joke). Sports events are always such good vibes, so I would love to be a part of bringing these socials to the society, giving back to ABACUS after enjoying the events for the past year. Fitness holds an important part in my life, so I know how much of a difference moving your body and exercising can have on your mental health. Sport brings the community together, and friendly competition is always good.

I also love sports and gym, so I want to be able to share my passion and maybe inspire people to see the joy they can get out of being physical and playing sports in a social environment. I solemnly swear to be as dedicated to this ABACUS role as I am to my gym gains.

Being a part of the committee would be a rewarding experience, making new friends by working in a team and also exercising responsibility and leadership. I also speak Mandarin, so would be nice to use it.

I'm reliable and sociable, you can trust me to make sure everyone is having a good time. :D

Christopher Chong

Hi guys,

My name is Chris and I am currently a penultimate-year student studying Economics and Business with EES. I am running for Welfare Officer / Sports Secretary next year and would love your support!

Having been part of ABACUS society since first year, I understand sport’s positive impact in bringing people together to have fun alongside their busy uni schedules. Personally, I would therefore like to be in a position in which I can help keep running these sporting events and ultimately improve them to become better than ever.

In terms of my background and passion for sport, I support ManU, watch a bit of F1 and currently Captain UCL Badminton 1st team (lmk if you want to play). From this I have gained experience in event planning, leadership and creating memorable socials. So hopefully this will allow me to create a program of enjoyable sporting events for everyone next year.

Next year, I plan to continue running the same sporting events that happened this year + additional sports + more frequent. E.g dodgeball, football, basketball, badminton, volleyball, bouldering and tennis. Lmk if you have any other cool sporting events / anything related to sport ideas and I will of course do my best to accommodate these.

As welfare officer, I will also be committed to ensuring that UCL ABACUS provides a supportive and inclusive environment for all members.

Cheers and hopefully see you next year!

Chris :)
